ok so today i just found out that my brother and his girlfriend are having a baby :) i am thrilled and so is my mom. he has a different dad than me but the same mom. he has skitzophrenia-bipolar. something like that :S. and hes on medication and hes fine now. but he met his girlfriend with the same sort of disease. they're both fine, taking meds and whatnot. but im worried if they're baby will turn out like that? nobody on my moms side has any diseases, niether his side. except for his dad, which i think he might of had some mental disease as he killed himself. but anyways please, if anybody has any ideas let me know :) thanks alot

As long as the parents stay on top of their illnesses and maintain a healthy lifestyle it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have some genetic components, so there is a chance that their child will also be afflicted. However, they can be better equipped to deal with it since they have experience themselves. Although, there should be a contingency plan for what to do to keep the child safe if either or both of them relapse. With a good support system they'll do fine raising a child.

I'm really not sure here.

One idea is that this may be more of a legal question.
Could it be possible for these young parents to sign a legally binding contract Stating to the effect that so long as the child is in their home, they will be medicated daily??? This document could or would have an if-then clause providing a provision for the child to become the ward of a specific guardian ???

I'm just not sure how this lays out legally, but having seen similar in real life, it sure appears to be necessary to the child's welfare.
