I would like to know how far in advance I should order my wedding favors. I am inviting 175 people, with the expectation that some people won't be able to come, so I'm hoping to have between 150 and 160 people. I thought that I should maybe order 150 of them now, just to know I have them, and then if we end up having 10-15 more people RSVP, I would just have to rush order that 10 or 15 favors. Is this a good idea or should I just wait?

As long as they aren't perishable and you have the room to store them, order them as soon as you want, or whenever you find a good deal. I bought 110 votive holders that are doubling as place card holders (1 per couple, with 5-10 extras) because I found them for $1.55 when they were sold everywhere else for $2.25. My wedding is not until October of 2008, so at the time that I bought them, it was still more than a year away. Now they're just in the boxes in a corner. In my opinion, if I can get a lot of the little things taken care of one-by-one along the way, it's less I have to deal with later. No sense in keeping everything to the side if you don't have to. As far as the extras, if it's only a matter of 10-15 extra favors, just order them from the start and save yourself the stress (and the extra charge) of a rush delivery. It's common for brides to have extras of their favors, and you can either hang on to them or give them away to friends/family who may want another one. Worse comes to worst, you sell the extras on eBay or Craigslist. Good luck!

It depends... how long will it take for your order to arrive? Go by that. Order in enough time for them to get to you about a week before the wedding. You just dont know how many people you will have. I think only about half of our guest list came to the wedding. So because I used the same logic that you describe, I had about 50 extra favors.

And depending on what you are getting, you may end up losing money on the rush order if it's something that has a quantity discount and high rush shipping fees.

Well if they are inexpensive favors, I would just order the full 175- it won't hurt to have extras at the reception. It's better to have extra than not enough. And if you have a few extras in the end, I'm sure there will be a few people who don't mind getting extra.

If there are a little pricey, I would probably wait until you get all your RSVPs if you have the time to. If you're short on time and they are pricey, then yeah go ahead and get the 150.

Statistically you should only expect about 75% of your invites to actually show up... I invited over 200 people and about 120 showed... Because remember, if there is a family of five, if one doesnt come, neither will the other four (most likely)... You could go ahead and order favors... if you are inviting 175 I would think that 150 would be enough...

If they are not food, you can order them as far in advance as you want to. There are deals on sites like the Knot and other places where you can get plenty of good deals.

I wouldn't order anything foodwise until closer to the wedding.

You could always order more than you think you'd need, there are always places you can put the extras (work, home, etc).

Order 175, just in case everyone comes.

I would order them about 2 months before, just so you can have them and get such a simple task out of the way.

I would just go ahead and order them now. You can always give the extras away to the DJ, catering people, photographer. people that couldn't attend. and have a few extra for yourself.
