In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."

Why is it ok for Christians to thank God and Jesus for their good fortune, but Non Christians are not allowed their own opinion.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? Is it Ok to be censored just because you're obviously not a Christian?

First of all, let me say that I am a Christian, pretty devout, ( I work as a church musician) and while I perhaps would disagree with that statement, I appreciate the fact that she is at least honest about her atheism. While I, as a Christian, should certainly acknowledge the presence of Christ in my daily life, I do find it rather off-putting when people drop Christ's name into everything.
I actually have always thought that Griffin is pretty funny, and while maybe it wasn't the smartest thing to say from a public relations standpoint, I certainly admire her guts for at least being honest about her beliefs. I would much rather hear that sort of honesty then hear someone thank God or Christ without truly meaning it.
Unfortunately a lot of the Christians in this country have become more and more "right wing" in their views. I am a member of a United Church of Christ, which is a very liberal, forward thinking faith. We have ordained openly gay people as ministers since the 1960's, a few years ago our national synod passed a proposal to help foght for gay rights and the legalization of gay marriages, and our leaders have actually come out and stated that it is not our job as Christians to convert people of other faiths (particularly those of the Jewish or Muslim faiths) but instead to recognize the fact that other religions also have a covenant with God, and that while it is not the same covenant that we have through Christ, it is nonetheless a holy and sacred covenant. It apalls me that other Christians attempt to use Christ as a stepping stone to hate people of other faiths or even people of no faith. As a Christian I respect her thoughts about religion, and while I do feel that people of faith, regardless of what that faith may be, tend to be more at peace with themselves and the world around them, I certainly admire her courage in standing up for what she believes in.
The fact that her remarks would be censored is just another case of Christians who are so insecure about their faith causing a stink because someone disagrees with them. I feel strong enough in my faith to realize that nothing that Kathy Griffin says or does can shake it. I'd suggest to those who feel threatened by her statements to take a long hard look at your own faith, whatever it may be. Your beliefs are probably not half as strong as hers.

Your friend said etc. etc. etc..........That is a horrible comparison!! My spouse is not my Creator, and I would never tell my husband those words, and I certainly would not mock / curse the Higher power. You know, atheists are always ranting that Christians are hateful, narrow-minded, and disrespectful. Well isn't that the pot calling the kettle black! They take any and every opportunity to spit in God's face and rally their unprecedented hatred with no thought or respect to others. They want respect?? Then start learning how to give it. Christians standing up and counter-voicing an attack against our Lord is not wrong. We are called to be defenders of the faith, and turning the other cheek DOES NOT mean rolling over and playing dead like a great many Believer's have done.

Although her speech was in bad taste (I'm not even Christian and even I found her Jesus remarks to be unnecessary and I know she did it just to incite controversy and piss off Christians. She admits to being a militant atheist so I'm not surprised), I don't think she should be censored, no. I still remember the furor that erupted when Cybil Shepherd thanked the Goddess in her acceptance speech (Emmys too, actually). It is kinda hypocritical that people are alright with people thanking God and Jesus and all that but the moment someone thanks a non-Christian deity or whatever, that person gets burned at the stake.

Personally I never did care to watch her because all she spouts is foolishness and ungodly thoughts. I am glad that I will not held accountable for all the filth that she spews from her mouth. To claim that she is better than or not acknowledge that Jesus and Him alone allows her to be eligible for the award is blasphemous!

In Matthew 12:36 Jesus tells us the following,

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

The apostle James wrote,
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
James 3:5-12

Gossip is sin, blasphemy is sin, as is lying and all who vilify anyone or anything shall reap the harvest of their sin which will be an eternity in Hell and separation from God.

It's about time someone stood up for decency.

I'm just stunned that Kathy Griffin won an award for anything.

Honestly? Award shows are beholden to their corporate sponsors. Saying anything controversial in an acceptance speech is considered a bad idea (can't anger the paying customers). Remember when Michael Moore was booed unmercifully at the Oscars for using his acceptance speech to bash Bush? And this was liberal Hollywood.

Well, truthfully, it was probably to her benefit that they censored it because a lot of people might boycot her for expressing a non-christian belief. I think it just shows our dopuble standard: anyone can use an award show to broadcast their religiosity, but if they broadcast a lack there-of, it is bleep-worthy. I guess they are afraid of offending their viewers, but they would never dream of (nor would I support the idea of) censoring out all religious speech. I don't think they should have censored her, but that's just the world we live in, I guess.

Do you have a source for this? I'd love to read it (I'm not doubting you, just curious).

Thanks.

Wow, that pretty much refutes the "Christians are so oppressed in our society" whining we hear all the time here, doesn't it? Can't do anything to offend the Christians - the Political Correctness Police will jump all over you.

Griffin is a TV star of some sort?

I believe that Jesus is the son of God.
But I disagree with censoring another's beliefs.

It's a sad day in America when we have to submit to the whims of few overly zealous crazies . If you listen carefully you can hear the Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves.
