I have a 5 lbs Yorkie who suffers from Weed allergies. I've been giving him Benadryl for Kids (12.5 mg) twice a day (1/2 pill per dose) for the past 5 days. How long should I keep giving him the medecine. I tried giving him only one dose yesterday, but he was almost chewing off his front leg from scratching and knawing at it.

Unless you want to take him for allergy shots, you will have to continue the benedryl daily as long as the weeds are around. I don't know where you live, but if it is someplace that has a real winter (not like here in South Florida) during the time of year that all the green stuff goes away, you can probably stop the meds. You can try eliminating the weeds from your yard to minimize his exposure, but this is sometimes not enough. I had a dog that was allergic to several types of trees that I don't even have in my yard, and the specialist said if there were any within like a half mile, the pollen would still be getting into her environment.

The dosage is 1-2 mg per pound
For liquid, for a 6-8 lb dog 1/3-1/2 a teaspoon.

Most vets however say to stay away from the children's and to use adult.

I would double check with your vet on that. Also for how long he should be taking the meds.

You really need to speak to a vet about this. Presumably it was a vet who diagnosed the allergy? I not, how do you know what he's allergic to?

Call the vet who said to give him Benadryl and ask what the dose is - they should've told you this of course. If the situation is not improving on the suggested medication/dose, you need to tell the vet this. Allergies need to be treated indefinitely, they're not something that go away.

You should NEVER put an animal on medication, or choose a dose, without veterinary supervision.

My Weimaraner has allergies. My vet did an allergy profile on her to narrow down what she's specifically allergic to. We then treated her with 10-months worth of allergy shots to desensitize her to her allergens. I wouldn't think giving your dog Benadryl every single day is a good idea. I give my dog Benadryl on the rare occasions that she has outbreaks now. Please speak to your vet - they could probably really help your dog out. He will be much happier.

You should give the dog the Benadryl for as long as his symptoms remain, which could be the entire allergy season. If the pills you are currently giving him contain red dye, you should watch his reaction to it closely because dogs have been known to have bad reactions to red dye. The medicine shouldn't hurt the dog and if it seems to be helping then continue to give it to him.

Stop the illegal drug and spare your dog! j/k You should bring your dog to the Vet. or you might consider trying a pet shampoo that is medicated (might help).

Poor puppy!

He will need medicine for the rest of his life. Have you asked a vet for recommendations?

Good luck!
