No, I don't expct them to. However if they are going to talk about how evolution is the correct choice then they should know why, it doesn't take a biology major to know that.

Interesting question.

I think many do expect that level of understanding, because we Atheists do tend to rely on 'fact' for belief.

Unfortunately it is impossible to become an expert on everything. So we as Atheists rely on the what the people that do become experts tell us.

This is far different to religion, because religious people rely on theologians and ministers for their scientific understanding.

I would never take my car to a local priest if it broke down, because, chances are he doesn't have nearly as much understanding about cars as my mechanic. The same applies to biology, physics, medicine, astronomy etc...

Rev Al, why are you relying on a document from Gould written in 1977? We have learned a tremendous amount since that was published.

As a skeptic I expect everyone to become educated in every subject there is.

Creationist are the ones that ignore the facts.

If you wonder why atheists debate creation in the religion section its because deists answer legitimate questions in the science section with the same misinformed illogical remarks they use here.

I think the biggest issue is many creationist look at science in the exact same way as they look at religion. They believe religion has all the answers, and therefore when they come across someone who believes in science above religion, the religious person thinks if the evolutionist, or any science for that matter does not have all the answers (and science does not), it is flawed.

They don't. That would be like expecting creationists to know something about the history of the Bible.

Jerry Falwell is a famous creationist.

He did not know the language the Bible was written in, when asked directly.

Ignorance about what we profess to believe is not uncommon.

Most belief is like a comfort blanket.

How would that help??

Not all biology majors are created equally (see above) and unlike Christianity, we biologists don't excommunicate our biology majors for being nutjobs....

I mean, some people who are biology majors are positively dim.

Good question. Why ask questions about evolution directed towards atheists in the Religion & Spirituality section when those questions should be presented to the Science section?

i'm an atheist. Do you suspect that i might desire to instruct the Adam and Eve tale in Bible college? i think of there is not any doubt that i might desire to instruct the words of the story yet might desire to I impart upon those infants that those are the actual words of God and it is what incredibly surpassed off? might desire to I do it besides as you? might you go with me to be the guy who teaches your infants the thoughts in the Bible and God's meaning in the Bible? i think of i will pass away it at that.

no, just as atheists should not expect all Christians to have read the bible backwards and forwards in it's entirety and interpret everthing as literal and think were all bible thumpers going through life jumping up and down and singing "Jesus loves Me"
