Ali was the quickest heavyweight - Marciano had one of the hardest punches-Ali one of the heavyweights who could take a hard punch. Ali was never knocked out by a punch.

Those things being stated ----Ali win by decision or on cuts

How to answer this question would be looking at their opponents. Ali fought in the 60's, 70's & 80's when some of the best heavyweights of all time were his competition. Joe Frazier knocked Ali down once in three fights, George Foreman probably the hardest hitter ever never had Ali in trouble in the least bit. Ken Norton, Larry Holmes, Earnie Shavers, Sonny Liston, etc. These fighters never hurt Ali even when Ali was way past his prime & Holmes beat him up he still never floored Ali.

On the other hand Rocky beat a lot of over the hill fighters. Louis was almost 40, what about Archie Moore he was almost 40. He didn't beat another legendary fighter when they were in their prime.

Rocky wouldn't have been able to KO Ali & Ali would have just stuck & jabbed him just like he did Frazier who was a short small heavyweight like Marciano. Ali would have won a unanimous decision about 10 rounds to 5. Plus Rocky never had someone take his shots & tell him is that all you got. Ali did that to Foreman & Foreman said he realized he couldn't hurt Ali & that took away from his fight.

Remember Foreman was considered invincible when Ali KO'd him in 8 rounds. Same thing with Sonny Liston.

Ali easy decision.

Alright, Marciano was stronger and packed knockout power in both fists but that's about it. In all other respects, Muhammad Ali was FAR SUPERIOR than him. Ali was a lot faster, both of hands and feet, and even though he carried his hands low he couldn't be hit because of his quickness and amazing reflexes. During his prime, that is, the Cassius Clay era, he was practically untouchable. And while Ali was not a one-punch KO artist, he punched in rapid and sustained combinations - as many as a dozen at a time - thus leaving his opponents dazed and confused all the time. Through the years, especially after the exile, Ali also exhibited a solid jaw. He absorbed the punches of the game's most brutal hitters like Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, etc. but was never KO'd. He got knocked down four times but he always got up quick. Marciano might knock Ali down but Muhammad would surely rise up and batter Rocky into submission in the later rounds.

Whoever said the computer proved it was way off base. If that were the case they could just use a computer to determine the winner of all fights today. If a computer in 1969 could do it, a computer today could do it better. They filmed 70 one minute rounds, with 7 different endings, and just before they released it Marciano died. In his honor they then chose an ending that had Marciano winning.

When you consider that Marciano's name opponents were past their primes, in some cases FAR past their primes, it's easy to see why he got out undefeated.

Ezzard Charles--natural light heavyweight--35
Joe Walcott--38 first fight, 39 the second fight
Joe Louis--37 years old
Archie Moore--42 or 45, depending on which birth certificate

Rocky was around 185 pounds and fought men who were naturally that size also, except for old Joe Louis who was around 200 pounds at the end of his career. That's all well and good except when you start to think about guys like Joe Frazier, a very small heavyweight by today's standards, yet he was 20 pounds heavier than Marciano.

Marciano hit very hard, but he hit very hard for a smallish cruiserweight, which is the weight class he'd be in today. At heavyweight standards, especially today, he'd be swatted away like a fly.

Ali would toy with him, tie him up when he felt like it, take any punch he might land effortlessly, and wipe him out much like Mayweather did to Gatti. Marciano would find out what it's like to fight someone bigger, faster, stronger, and better than the small, older men he feasted on. And he wouldn't like the result.

As Ali used to say, "I wouldn't even SPAR with a man that small." Much less fight one.

In one fight, obviously either could win, but if they fought 100 times, I think Ali would win about 85% of the time.
People think Rocky was such a great puncehr, and he was, but many of his knockouts were from the build up of punches over time, not one-pnch KO's . Also, Rockys defense was only average and he had VERY short arms, the shortest reach of any heavyweight champ. I think 9 times out of 10 Ali would just completely pick him apart from start to finish, especially the young Ali, when he fought Liston.
Rocky was great, and his will was incredible, but against the young Ali (who never lost, remember- he didnt lose until after he sat out several years)- Rocky would get taken apart.

Make no mistake about it, Marciano was offered a fight with Ali- Marciano did not want to come out of retirement, once competition got extremely stiff in the division, Marciano retired- Ali like most great fighters fought way passed his prime did not retire, but stayed and fought- Marciano did not.

Instead of proving how great he was by coming back and fighting, the way many great champs did- Marciano stayed retired.

Ali would have knocked Marciano OUT INSIDE OF 7 ROUNDS!

This question was asked & answered in 1970 when thousands of statistics for all Heavyweight Champs from John L Sullivan up to Ali were fed into a computer creating a tournament of " match-ups " ( like Jack Dempsey vs. Rocky Marciano ) to determine the best of all time. This tournament culminated in the " Superfight " which matched Marciano against Ali. Rocky was still alive then & he dropped 50 pounds & sparred 70 rounds with Ali. Their " fight " was filmed with 6 different endings, but when all was said & done ... the computer determined that in their prime .....Marciano would have KOd Ali in the 13th round. Ali sued claiming the computer was biased since it was made in Memphis ( although I still don't know how a computer could be biased ? ) but his suit was dismissed. After some people questioned the reliability of a 1970 computer.....it was pointed out to them that the computer was totally reliable & was the same computer used by the US to put a man on the moon in 1969. The film of this " fight " was only shown in theatres for 1 day & 3 weeks later Rocky died in a plane crash. This film is now available on DVD.
