When JR drives the high line, he revs the car more so than drivers who stay at the bottom of the track. So higher RPM's and a little bad luck will blow an engine before 500 miles.

Despite other comments Dale Jr. is running the R07 engines in the COT car and his regular car runs both the R07 and the SB2.2. Many things play into the mix when it comes to engine failures in the new R07 Engines, including machining tricks used to gain extra horse power. The new engine has quite a number of changes in head design, less port angle, more coolant porting and better oil delivery.
Dale Jr. & Tony Eury both have input to the engine dept on design. So it boils down to engine experimentaion and Driving habits which ultimately cause engine failure.
Below are a few links that might help you better under stand some of the machining involed and tricks to gain horse power.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. knows how to drive. After how many years as a driver, let alone spending his entire life engulfed with the sport, any claim that it's his driving that's causing the engine trouble is ludicrous. DEI has given Dale crappy cars and engines continuously. Hendrick will treat him a whole lot better. Mav - If you're trying to suggest that Dale's crew chief is aiding in a sabotage of his motors... you are out of your mind. Tony Eury Jr. is Dale Jr's cousin, for one thing, and he's going to Hendrick WITH Jr. They have probably one of the most successful driver-crew chief partnerships in the history of Nascar.

His engines are Chevrolet SB2.2 The same engine all Chevy teams ran for the past several years. Other Chevy teams are now using the new Chevy engine but DEI has not switched yet.

At least 3 of the engine failures (including last Saturday) were caused by problems with the belt drive on the front of the motor. A belt similar to a timing belt in a car turns the oil pump. When this belt fails the engine gets no oil and blows within seconds. The driver cannot affect the operation of the belt.

This belt system is simple and has been in use for years. The problem is either a bad attitude among DEI shop mechanics causing mistakes, a disgruntled employee purposely causing problems or incompetence.

They keep saying it is something different each time, but seems awfully suspicious. Here is part of an article I just read on Yahoo Sports:

"Although DEI has partnered with RCR on an engine program, Story said the teams are not yet using true common engines. They are combining parts and pieces, and he said his engineers are baffled as to why Earnhardt's keep breaking."

Yep, all Jr Nation fans want to blame Teresa..But its just plain ole equipment failures, DEI is behind HMS, and RCR, JGR, when it comes to technology, the last few have been a belt drive thing, this should not happen with technology today...I hope its not a disguntled DEI employee... With HMS next yr, I doubt Jr will ever have to worry about this any more....Engines don't blow like they did back in the day.. I'm so glad he is leaving....

well technically it could be causes the engines parts not being of the best quality, Dale over revving and blowing it himself, or habing to use old parts off of old engines because Teresa is not allowing him the same finances for raceing supplies she was as he is leaving her team this year. My vote would be for the third one.
