Check out the link below regarding changes to the Electoral Act: on the day Howard declares the election date, the Electoral Rolls close! This will disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters, most of them young first-timers.

So if you're not already enrolled, now is the time to get your name down.

This is typical of the jack boot tactics of this Government. They have absolutely no respect for the people of this country and will do anything to stay in power. They are clearly, so full of panic that they are prepared even to manipulate the whole electoral process. It is disgraceful. They simply have to go. We must give them a clear message that this arrogance will no longer be tolerated and return democracy and freedom to Australia.

While I disagree with so much about this government and will happily be voting them out of office, to be fair, they have been running advertisements encouraging people to get on the electoral roll because of the changes.

Very simply, if you are not on the roll when the election is called, you have til the end of that day to do it. Previously the rolls closed about ten days before the election. If you are not on the roll now, you can get a form from any Post Office or online at
http://www.aec.gov.au/Enrolling_to_vote/Update_enrolment.htm
You can't complete the form online, you need to sign it so you must post it.
You can apply to be put on the roll at 17 and your name will be added when you turn 18.

Fill out the form and send it off now, the election could be called at any time but probably in the next two weeks.

Full information about the election and enrolling to vote can be found at the Australian Electoral Commission website at http://www.aec.gov.au

The government has not been running the ads for voting enrollments, it has been the electoral commission.

Yes, I will be voting, and hopefully I will see little Johnny defeated. My wife will be voting for the first time in Australia since gaining her citizenship and she will be voting the same as me.

It sounds a lot like what George and Jed Bush did in the elections before last in the USA. And Both the USA and Australia project themselves to the rest of the world as 'ideal democracies'. It would be laughable if it weren't so serious!

erm...there is that stupid advertisement by the Australian Electoral Commission that tells people to enrol to vote.

You know which one, the one that massacres an INXS classic with pianoforte

It's disgraceful! I thought that they wanted people to be able to vote & have their say - hence the fact we're a democratic country!
