They have been told it is the word of god since they were babies. They don't quite dare to question it for fear of going straight to hell.

Actually, Chapter 1 of Genesis is an "overall" picture of the creation and Chapter 2 goes into more depth of certain creations, mainly man and woman. They do not conflict each other.
The Bible does mention the other items you are referring to:
The Earth is round Isa. 40:22; Prov. 8:27
Arcturus and other stars move through space. Job 38:32
Morning and night are mentioned in Genesis 1
The sun creation is mentioned in the creation week specifically for the marking of "days", "seasons", etc.
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so
There are no "proven" contradictions in the Bible. Each time one is "proposed" it has been proven to be a misunderstanding or misapplication of the scriptures.

Genesis 1 and 2 are not in disagreement with each other. Chapter 1 is an overview and ch 2 add more detail. The occasional apparent discrepency in the order of things is a result of weak translations and misunderstandings, not contradictions.

People believe the Bible is the truth because that's what they have been told since they were born... And they are afraid to question it, or they find a comfort believing in it.

People believe the bible is the truth because the bible says it is the truth. I mean, you couldn't have a more objective and scientifically correct statement than that, could you?

As science advances to more knowledge of the universe and formation of life, the Bible becomes more understandable and begins to make more sense. How old is the universe? 18 billion years? Who knows? God only knows.

There are as many reasons as there are people.
I think they are WRONG... but they are entitled to their beliefs.
