your opinion. I was on 6 vicodin a day. Their changing it to 2 m.s. contin a day tomarrow. Is that the same as oxycontin? Don't worry. I plan to go off once I have my surgery and am done with all this dental work and if I stop breaking my feet. In like 6 months, I'm going off anything addicting. I'm going on Suboxone to make it easier. I hate this. I'm only 29. I have a three yr.old. I don't want to be a pill popping mom. I'm just grateful she is so healthy. Is m.s.contin something scary? Don't people robb pharmacy's over this? What do I do if it doesn't work as good as my Vicodin? Why do they switch you, other than not having to take as many? I think it has Morhpine in it. I've never had morhpine. I don't want to feel high. I've seen people on it in the hospitol and they were incoherent. I'm sure my doctor knows what he's doing. I just never like change. So, what are the benifits to the switch other than being time releasing and lasting longer?

Well I have to chime in a bit here. The first 3 responses are very good and right on. James R is wrong. MS contin is morphine sulphate contin. The term contin is generally used to denote a long acting/time release medicine. Oxycodone is the other drug mentioned and it is a synthetic opiate, the Oxycontin drug is the long acting form of oxycodone.

I would not worry too much about getting "high". While you may have some effects from the meds, people in pain generally do not experience that high sensation.

My opinion is that it is a great idea to be concurrently on the suboxone. I think it aids tremendously in pain relief when taken this way. Best of all it should make it easier for you, when it is time to wean off of the meds. Trust me, opiate withdrawal is a really bad experience, unless it is managed very closely by you and your doctor. It sounds as if your doc is on top of things so don't worry.

Oh, the benefits, one will be only having to take the med once or twice a day depending on your dosing. Also the morphine is generally not as habit forming as the synthetic opiates are. Not that you get high from them, but rather in the sense that your body starts to require them to feel normal. Lastly it should relieve your pain as well or better than the vicodin, without the acetamenophin, which can be very harmful to your liver when taken for a long time, or when taken in high dosages.

Best of luck to you.

You need to tell your Dr that the medication he has prescribed does not work for your type of pain. The better thing about the morphine is that it is a longer lasting pain relief, the extended relief tabs that you are on slowly go into your system to keep the pain at a tolerable level. The vicodin or percocet are quick acting meaning they hit a level failrly quickly and then drop off leaving you with the need to reach for more and more of it and giving you a roller coaster pain relief ride rather than a steady dose of medication that the extended release ones do. You could ask your Dr if he was comfortable with maybe trying the 30 mg. morphine tabs before you go to a quick acting opioid. It really is much better for you in the long run and know that no medication will ever take ALL of the pain away - it is just there to make the pain tolerable. Good luck with your pain level and do talk frankly with your Dr about it. He and you should be able to find a happy medium that you are both comfortable with.

First suboxon is a opiote blocker. It too is for pain. It's used to get you off of opiates. ms contin is a long acting opiate. It is slowly released in your system for 12 hrs. you take it 2 times a day. No it's not morphine. It is oxycontin. Yes be careful ppl. will knock you in the head for this medication. It is highly addictive. Take it as prescribed. It will not make you incoherent. At first it will maybe make you drowsy. the side effects depends on the person. The benefits is it doesn't have tylenol in it, and it last longer. Do now chew it up, crush it up, swallow it whole. Eat before taking the medication. Do not take more than prescribed and you should be fine. The suboxon you will be winned off of. You should do fine if you follow your doctors directions.
Good luck

MS Contin is a long-acting form of morphine. It's not related to Oxycontin/Oxycodone.

It's stronger than the Vicodin---but don't panic. That means that because it's stronger, it will control your pain better with LESS. When you take something like Vicodin, you get a big surge of the medication right after you take it, then is wears off to nothing as it becomes time for the next dose. The MS Contin won't do that. It will give you steady pain relief--no high.

Give it a chance. I think you'll get better relief.

They had to switch you over from the vicodin because you were maxing out on the acetaminophen. M.S. contin is a better pain medication. The biggest side effects of this drug are constipation. You should take a stool softener and milk of magnesia.
