Uh, if you listen to what everyone else thinks about how to raise your own child you'll be absolutely paralyzed, as nearly everyone has something to say, and they all contradict each other.

You are doing the best you can. You should refuse to discuss your parenting decisions with anyone except each other and your child.

You're the parent, YOU decide what your kids listen to. Frankly I wouldn't purchase any CD's from WalMart since the DO edit music. I don't beleive in censorship and certainly NOT a retail establishment censoring what I am paying for.

I am a very conservative parent. That said, I don't want to censor my child to the point where he's going to freak out when he is exposed to it in a few years.

I think you took the appropriate steps in that you
a-previewed the music first
b-bought the edited version
c-explained to him that sometimes people use bad words because they can't think of anything intelligent to say

The only thing that I would add is to talk to him about what his peers may be listening to/doing. He may already be dealing with peer pressure and he needs to know that it's ok to do what he feels is right and to not just go along with the crowd. You can use music as an opportunity to talk about drugs, sex, gangs, or whatever influences may be in your community.

I personally think that Eminem is just a bad influence in general. He speaks of beating his wife etc. Why would you want your son to have an influence such as this?
He is your son to allow to do as you wish, but maybe you should get a good listen to what he is really talking about in his music before allowing it. there is enough violence in the world today.

Just use your own judgment. Listen to it first and if you think it's appropriate then let him have it. It's impossible to shelter him from the bad things in the world but just do the very best that you can. And good luck. Being a parent is full of difficult decisions but it sounds like your doing your best.

They are edited for language not content... the violence and hatred is still there, and not especially appropriate for a nine year old... but thats just my opinion. If your son is mature enough to know the difference between music and actions then it should be okay.

My son is 8, and like your son he likes listening to Eminem. His dad is the one who got him started on that. My son also knows that he does not say the bad words...I say he's your son and you are his mother and you know what is best...I told my son if he mistreats this material in anyway, he will be grounded from it... All has been well, thankfully...And also it's not like you can keep them in a bubble their whole life...Eminem comes on the radio all the time...you don't know what station the bus drivers are playing, and for the people who say they will NEVER let their children listen to it....Have they rode the bus to school lately?

He's just not a good role model, and his songs are full of trash.
Get your son into some good old fashioned rock, or even some good alternative stuff - but YOU listen to everything first. Songs that are about fun - they don't have to be childish or preachy, but just about general things - not violence, sex, or drugs.
BTO, Queen, the Ramones, etc.

I think it's ok.. I buy my daughter the same thing. The music on the radio and even the TV is alot worse. You kid will eventully hear these things anyway. There is only so much sheltering you can do, in this day and age.

Ignore them. You are doing great by listening to it first. I do not feel music is the problem with children today. It is a lack of parental supervision in their lives, so good for you.
