12 pm is noon in the US and countries using the 12 hour system primarily. Other countries prefer the 24 hour system to decrease confusion over this issue. However, there is still confusion over whether to use 2400 or 0000 hours on the 24 hour clock. Hospitals and the military in almost all countries use the 24 hour system as it is critical and was a problem if the am or pm was left off. also there was significant confusion over which was 12 am and pm.

Technically as am is ante meridium in latin or before noon, and pm is post meridium or after noon, there is no 12 am or pm thus the confusion.

EDIT: the decision of the tradition of using 12 pm as noon was established after the aregument that 12:00 noon plus and fraction of a second was noon, and 12:00 midnight and any fraction of a second was am. As it is vitually impossible for anything to happen on the exact moment of noon or 1200 hour, thus every thing after 11:59 am is PM

2nd Edit: This is the first time I have ever caught Dr. Frank wrong about anything!!! This makes my day!!!

Surely 12pm should be midnight, ie 12 hours post meridiem, 12 hours after noon or 12 hours after midday? Personally I would not use either, I was taught that it was 12 noon and not to use am OR pm.

Incidentally, in the forces that there was no such thing as 2400 hours. It was either 2359 or 0001 hours.

You have to do that with some computer programs too, if you try and enter 0000 hours it just says you haven't filled in the field. That's why it's got to be either 0001 or 2359.

There is no such thing as 12pm (or 12am for that matter).

The proper description for the instance when both hands of a clock point to twelve is either noon or midnight.

If using the 24 hour clock system, however, you would use 1200 hrs or 0000hrs.

12pm is midday. 12am is midnight.

Most people find the 12pm time confusing. If you try to stick to the 24hr clock, it sure does help.
