I've tried in the past, and staining products other than wood just doesn't work.

So you have a couple of options...you could paint them in a dark colour, or you could use a wood graining tool to give the appearance of wood. You would paint a light brown colour first, let dry, then paint a dark brown. While still wet, you run the wood grain tool through the dark brown paint and voila - a cupboard that looks like a dark stained wood with real grain running through it. I've tried the tool, and its easy. I just wouldn't go crazy with it...

No they can not be stained. Even painting them can sometimes be tricky, a lot of times it is a plastic/vinyl picture of wood over the fiber board. Paint does not usually adhere very well to vinyl or plastic. If you are going to paint them check with a good paint store to see what kind of paint they recommend in this application. You could also look into refacing which covers the sides and frames of your cabinets with a veneer and then new doors are put on.

I had some of those cabinets once; I tried staining them and while the stain took it did not look very good.
I painted over them and they looked much better. the paint covered the fiberboard whereas the stain just darkened the cabinets but it still looked like fiberboard.
