They aren't going to like you for exposing them like this...
But, just between you and me, I think you're right. ;-D

Are you okay Oliver, can I help you up, I know take a deep breath, you'll be okay. Now don't do that again, you might get really hurt. Duck Phup can really floor you can't he. It's okay I had a hard time getting around the fallacies of religion too. But the truth is overwhelming, I first had doubts when I saw my first pictures of dinosaurs and they're bones. You'll come around too, in fact slowly sneak up on Duck Phup's answer and read slowly and quietly, try to absorb a little don't try to get it all in one sitting, you might have to come back to it a couple of times.

Atheists DO NOT believe that gods DO exist. That defines 'atheist'.
Religionists go around telling outlandish stories about invisible, magical, all-powerful entities and how these entities orchestrate and cause supernatural events. We simply do not believe the stories.
In general, atheists do not 'believe' simply because they find that the reasons or evidence purported to support the idea that invisible, magical sky-fairies 'exist' (gods) are not compelling, and thus are insufficient to initiate or support a mental state of 'belief'.
Religionists say that makes us 'atheists'. I say that just makes us 'sane'.
The word 'atheist' was not made up by atheists. Is there a word for people who do not believe in astrology?... the Easter bunny?... magical pink unicorns? No... there is only one reason that the word exists... another label was required ... along with heretic, apostate, etc... so they could briefly jot down the reason why they were torturing somebody, or burning them at the stake, or chucking them into a vat of boiling oil. Also, it was useful in law... making documents was expensive, so they could save space and expense by saying things like: "Heretics, apostates and atheists shalt be painfully and messily disembowled, and to defile their vile mortal remains the bishops shalt pisseth upon them, and then burn them upon a pile of dried horse dung." See? Economical use of language.
The world could get along quite nicely without the words atheist, agnostic, unbeliever, rationalist, humanist. All of those could be clumped together quite nicely if the religionists would simply refer to us as '... those sane people'.
"When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Religion." ~ Robert M. Pirsig
Think... seriously... THINK about this... you believe that a (fictional) cosmic Jewish zombie, who is his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced, by a talking snake with legs, to eat from a magical tree... (etc.)... and that there is something horribly wrong with people who ARE NOT so gullible and droolingly stupid as to believe such outrageously ridiculous codswallop.
Now... tell me right out whether you think that is SANE, or NOT SANE?

Oh, they do exist my friend. I do not believe in a god. I believe in follow teachings of others but not worshiping them.
Everyone has different beliefs about religion, we respect yours you should respect others. Maybe you should do a little research to maintain a better understanding of those who are atheists, or simple do not have a god.

I don't think Christians really exist either. If they really believed all that nonsense in the bible, they wouldn't have to keep going to church every week just to have some preacher reinforce the idea over and over again. It seems to require a continuous effort for them to supress their logic and reason and I don't think any of them are completely able to do it.

They do exist. You're choosing to define atheism otherwise...
If we go by your definition (something important but not deified), I would have to say that "atheists" don't exist. Everyone has something important that they hold on to... something that they work for to glorify or make better. More often than not, it's Self that they're working for. It's sad... I scroll through religious discussions and see people so willing to ridicule what they choose not to understand.
I hope that puts things in perspective.

If you are willing to call, say money, a god, does that not trivialize the concept of god altogether?
When I say I'm an atheist, it's because I reject YOUR god. It isn't that I deny that people might arbitrarily label anything they want as a god.

Actually you christians don't believe in many many gods. The ancient Greek and Roman gods for example, the Hindu Gods, and many others. So you are atheists as far as these gods are concerned. We're both atheists, I just go one god further than you do. Welcome.

Ha, ha, ha, ha.
I think your god is your bible. Conceived by man, bound by man, restricted by man's petty and base nature. Twisted by the thoughts of man into a contradictory and ridiculous form.

And that means you have a narrow world view. Do you believe in Zeus, by the way? Your answer could make you an atheist.
