Yes, they will most certainly die if given advocado's to eat. Also avoid banana's onions and chocolates. Otherwise they can eat about everything a human being eats. Just be sure to give them sunflower seeds every day.

There are certain foods that no bird including African Greys should eat they are; Avocados, mushrooms, chocolate, apple and pear seeds as they contain arsenic, carbonated beverages, or alcohol. Do not geed foods that are for other animals like cats or dogs especially the wet food in cans due to their trace levels of salmonella which is deadly for birds. Almonds would be a good choice to add to your birds diet since it has a high level of calcium which African Greys need more than most species of birds. Some larger nut shells can be hard for the birds and can cause choking hazards so just give them softer shelled nuts and shell the rest. Good Luck!

CAG's are deficient in Vitamin A and D. So it's important to feed foods rich in those vitamins.
ALL birds should NOT eat the following:
Chocolate, Caffeine, Avocado's, Alcohol, Fruit seeds or pits.
I don't know where people get the ideas of onions or milk products or even salt. Birds need iodized salt to form feather follicles. Probably because someone feeds the processed salt on chips and junk food, which does not contain the proper salt.
The milk and onions is just someone who is lactose intolerant or hates onions because birds don't get gas, LOL. They naturally eat all kinds of vegetation in the wild, including insects and dead animals for their bone marrow.
I see more and more people reading misinformation on false web sites everyday then people are born.
The best book to read is "Feeding My Pet Bird" by Petra M. Burgamann. It's available at Amazon.com for under 2 dollars at times. You will find yourself going back to that book time and time again.

yes it's true.
shouldn't offer cherry pits, branches from any sort of cherry tree, apple pits, and generally, just don't give them fruit pits or seeds of any kind.
i have listed a couple of websites which will give you good feeding info. take care.
P.S. Contrary to what others said here, bananas are not harmful for the bird. Sunflower seeds are very fattening and should only be offered on rare occasions.

I have never heard of an african grey not being able to eat anything specific to their species.
There are things birds cannot eat period. Avacodo, Onion, and Chocolate are probably the MAJOR no-nos when feeding your bird people food.

If you mean Greys as opposed to all other birds..No. African Greys are not so special that they have specific toxins that will effect no other bird.
But if you are speaking about birds in general..Yes.
Avocados , coffee( all caffeine ), alcohol, chocolate , seeds of apple or apricot or peach are all toxic.
Salt, sugar, dairy should all be used in moderation.
Chemical additives and preservatives should all be avoided.
