I thought this would be a fun question because I am seeing a lot of negative bashing around here. How do you dress your child(ren)? Where do you buy their clothing?
My son is 2 1/2 and all boy! He plays rough, gets dirty, and stinky!
No upscale brand name clothing here. I personally don't care for the style of it, let alone the price tag! My son is the traditional T-shirt and shorts kinda kid. He wears a lot of athletic style outfits as well-they breathe easier. My son loves anything with sports or transportation.
I usually stick to department store brands like JC Penny, Mervyn's, Kohl's, Target, Old Navy, Sear's, etc. At the outlet stores I like Osh Kosh & Carter's. My son owns 1 Gymboree outfit-it was a gift.
I find these brands do wash and wear quite nicely with minimal shrinking & fading. We have only one child, so I don't have to worry about saving clothing to pass down to another kid.
If I see a nice deal on Craigslist I'll buy it.
How about the rest of you?

My children wear everything from brand names such as The Children's Place and Gymboree to store brands such as Wal Mart. We go for quality and comfort-the name does not matter. Old Navy is one of my favorite stores.
Wal Mart's Garanimals brand for toddlers make GREAT play clothes! When my children were younger (they are now 9 and 7), we had a lot of them. They hold up very well even with a lot of wear and tear. And the price is outstanding!
My daughter prefers shorts or skirts with shorts underneath, and a nice shirt or blouse. My son usually prefers jeans and a t shirt. They pick out things they like (as far as color, theme, etc) that I think they will be comfortable in.
My only rule is that I will NOT pay an outrageous price just for a name on the tag, and that my children must look like children...not little pimps or "prostitots".

I have 3 children... a 3 year old son, an 18 month old stepson, and a 15 month old daughter, and we're expecting another baby girl in December. With a large family, we have to budget. I prefer the preppy-er styles on my kids. They wear a lot of dark jeans and khakis, polo-type shirts, button-ups, turtle-necks and sweaters. We don't buy very many things brand name. Most of our kids' clothes come from Target and the Children's Place (especially their jeans, CP jeans are very reasonably priced (2 for $22) and wash and wear GREAT), with the occasional piece coming from the sale rack at Gymboree, or from an overstock/discount store like TJ Maxx. I don't like most of Wal Mart's clothing, I find it tends to wear out after being washed a few times, and I need things to last. I also buy a lot of things at garage sales and online places like Craig's list. All that being said, as long as children are well cared for and reasonably clean most of the time, it really doesn't matter what they wear!

My kids are 8, 6, 4, and 1 1/2, and all very active. I dress them in anything that's machine washable and not white. I would describe their clothing style as "grass stained with holes in the knees". :-) And I hate the idea of my kid being a commercial, so anything with a brand name or slogan on it is out of the question. Although it's practically impossible given the selection at most stores, I do also try to make sure my 8-year-old girl is wearing things reasonable for 8-year-olds, not teenagers.....

Definitely check out Target, Forever 21, H&M, and other discount stores for "trendy" items. Hit jcrew, gap, and other "named" stores for basics that are classic and will never go out of style. Being a true fashionista means knowing how to mix the cheaper lines with the more expensive stuff and making it your own. There was just an article about that in the November issue of Vogue. Forget the Hollister.. it is cheap junk that tears easily and doesn't last. Totally over priced. The "rule" is to save your money when it comes to trendy items, but to spend the money on classic items that you can wear for years. I mix $15 items from H&M with designer brands and I get a lot of compliments on the cheaper H&M items. Just be a smart shopper. You can wear the current styles without being "branded".

We love hand-me-downs. I have a cousin that is a year older than my daughter. We get all her old clothes. When I buy her clothes I get them mainly on-line in the bargain section of Old Navy. Great deals and great clothes. Sometimes I buy from Wal-mart, too. I buy nicer outfits for church and special occasions at Baby Gap or boutique shops. She gets so dirty at daycare that I don't see the point in spending a ton of money on everyday clothes.
