You would not be able to tell. If the throat is swollen or sore, and the one bump would be enough to take him in. Even the doctor will need to culture the cells of his throat, to give you a diagnosis. Good luck!

Your MD can perform a Strep test in office or send out a throat culture to confirm a Strep infection. Strep infections are typically accompanied by sore throat, fever, and/or headache. A white bump in the back of the throat could be Strep, but it could also be mucus...

One white bump could be a myriad of things. How do you find out if it is strep throat? Go to a doctor. I'm not trying to be flippant. There are many strains of strep, one of which can potentially become rheumatic fever. Don't mess around with this.

The infection with strep bacteria causes symptoms within one to three days. You may develop a red throat with white patches. The tonsils are red and enlarged. There may be specks of pus present on the tonsils, or there may be a grey or white covering on the tonsils. With strep throat, people may also have trouble swallowing and may have tender, swollen lymph glands on the sides of the neck.

These are other symptoms with strep throat:

Headache
Abdominal (lower stomach) pain
Fever
General discomfort, feeling ill or uneasy
Loss of appetite and nausea
Muscle pain
Joint stiffness
Skin rash

The only way to know for sure if it is strep is to take him to the doctor and have then do a strep test...the sooner the better. Waiting too long increases the length of time he will be contagious and the duration of the infection.
