I had an interview for a teaching assistant job last month... I got the job, and am just waiting for the formal offer. My problem is that I included in my list of credentials that I have a certificate in TEFL via a distance learning course. I indicated that the cert would be issued in July 2007, because I was told by my distance learning instructor that it would take about 2 months to process my cert from time of submission. Problem is, it's my cert hasnt arrived yet. I followed up with my school and was told that it actually takes about 3-6 months. I know I can explain this to the school I applied to, but I am worried. The certificate isnt a requirement for the job, but I am afraid it will reflect badly since I placed it in my resume and don't have the actual paper yet. Should I say anything before signing the contract? Should I wait for them to ask? They didn't ask about it during my interview. Please help!!

The key is that they did not ask for it at the interview. Therefore it is not part of the decision to hire you i.e. they are not bothered whether you have a certificate or not.

Start the job and if they ask for it, then explain that the instructor messed up and you won't get the certificate for 3-6 months.
if they don't ask for it, then no need to say anything.

If they require it, they may employ you on the condition that you receive/produce the certificate within a set time period.

I wouldn't worry if they do not ask for it.

You need to follow up on the delivery.

I assume this position is with a public school district?

They don't care. Just make sure that when you get a copy you take a copy to the employees records office for your file.

Congrats on the job.

as long as you passed the course and just waiting for the certificate, it shouldn't be a problem. If your employers already know how long it takes to get it, they obviously aren't worried about it.
