Fitness,a good work out,fun.

It's only designed to be a cardio and fitness workout. Billy Blanks who developed it is a TaeKwon-Do black belt, and some of the techniques certainly reflect TaeKwon-Do type techniques.

It's definately not a martial art and it's not trying to teach you how to defend yourself. Indeed, many untrained people jumped on the initial bandwagon and began "teaching" Tae-Bo without any proper training, resulting in a lot of injuries to their unsuspecting participants as a result of improper weight distributions or knee hyper-flexion.

I thought Tae-Bo had pretty much disappeared as I haven't heard anything about it for years now :)

I'm glad no one said self-defense training. Its useless for that purpose (except as an add on for cardio workouts...). I've done some of the workouts, so I can tell you they are great for a cardio/endurance training session. Just remember that during the workout, in order to get the maximum physical benefits, you have to punch/kick incorrectly.
