Ok, for my birthday. I can either get a shotgun for smallgame and deer or a bow for deer. What do you think I should get? Can I use the shotgun for a late deer season in Pennsylvania?

Well, since the hunting season is longer for gun season, it makes sense to start with a shotgun. I would go 12 gage, get one with a rifled barrel (rifled barrel is best when using slugs for deer) and a bird barrel also with interchangeable chokes (so you can use it later for waterfowl dove, or quail hunting as well as small game like squirrel or rabbit. I think you'll be happiest with a gas action shotgun like the Model 11-87 Remington because it reduces recoil and makes shooting Slugs (preferred ammo for deer) much more comfortable. Used guns? look for a Rem 1100 also. They typically work very well with hunting strength loads and there are lorts of extra barrels out there. Winchester and Benneli also make gas operated shotguns.
Later, when you gotten more knowledgeable about hunting in general, by all means explore the world of bow hunting. Generally the bow season is first in the year, so you get first shot at the big ones. But bow have miuch less range than slug shotguns, so the stalk or overhead stand is all important with bow hunting. Be safe, respect the animal enough to harvest it swiftly without it suffering, and use the animal. Venison is delicious and healthy. Dave

I am going to assume you have neither a shotgun or a bow at this point. If that is the case then I think you will be better served by the shotgun. In my opinion, the 12 gauge will be the best for deer, turkey's, ducks, geese, squirrels and rabbits and small birds. It is very veristle.

Both are great choices. If it were me, I'd choose the one most challenging and that I can do the most with. Most anyone can kill Deer with a shotguns I have gotten countless numbers in my lifetime. But to be honest with you the best memories I ever had hunting, and the trips I will remember first were those I hunted as a Bowhunter. It takes skill, stealth, and determination far beyond any rifle or shotgun. You must have the ability to get up close and personal, and still make your shot. If you can do that, your hunting experiences will all be measured by what you accomplished and that was not easy
and a challenge to do in the first place..

Get the shotgun, you can hunt just about anything with it. You are very limited with a bow.
Happy hunting/shooting!!

Shotgun is your best choice because it is more useful and versatile.* Better investment in time and $$$.*

Another vote for shotgun.

Pumps are side by side doubles are my favorites.

A pump for things-that-go-bump-in-the- night,
and a double for hunting and targets.
