My mum has had cancer in the past and would like to get a full body PET scan for peace of mind but has been refused one when requested via a doctor because she is not high risk! She is willing to pay all costs, so I would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne has a PET scan machine. Whether they will do an elective PET scan is something you would have to ask them. They probably would if you had symptoms of cancer.

There are several other nuclear imaging centers in the area because I remember answering this same question about a year ago. Check the YA archives.

Austin Hospital & Peter McCallum Cancer Centre both do PET scans but I doubt that they are available without a medical referal.

She neds to talk to her oncologist about this, unless there is reason to believe this would be a useful diagnostic tool in her case, why put yourself through one?

a radioactive solution is injected in to a vein and after a half hour or so they do a cat scan on you with the idea being that the positrons in the injected solution will congregate in or near a tumor/cancer you may have. i had one and it showed a lung cancer in my upper right lung. i had it excised about 5 years ago and so far thanks to GOD i have had no more recurrence.
