I had some extensive bold line work done on my arm approximately 4 weeks ago. I applied moisturizer 2-3 times per day for 2.5 weeks. I watched as the tattoo progressed through the various stages of healing. (I have a lot of ink, have used this artist extensively, have followed this after-care regimen in the past, and have never had any problems.)

After 3.5 weeks (5-6 days ago) I noticed that the lines suddenly raised significantly. I also noticed some little bumps under the lines spaced at irregular intervals. (Not all areas were affected.)

The tattooed area has always been covered to avoid sun exposure and I applied sunscreen to the area (in addition to covering it with clothing) when I took a trip to the beach two or three days before observing the "rise".

Now I'm wondering if the raised areas will "settle-down" to how they were prior to the sunscreen application or if they've been permanently changed/damaged.

Is there anything that I can do at this point?

For heavy line work you exposed your tattoo to the sun - covered or not, beach is beach....and really, it was too soon for sunblock.

Stay out of the sun and only gradually reintroduce it. Wait a couple more weeks before you start putting blocks on it.

You can try a little cortisone cream to help with the sun reaction. Some people take benadryl at night, too. It might just happen again, hard to tell.

I have had a lot of ink done and this is pretty normal if you have had some extreme color or hours in that spot. More than likely it is just your scar tissue underneath it. Keep in mind it can take up to 6 months for it to fully heal. It will eventually go down if you keep rubbing it to break the scar tissue down.

it sounds to me like when the artist was doing the bold lines he might have been alittle too intense and caused some scar tissue. it's common in tattoos that have to be retraced to get that bold look to them. my fiance's whole outline of his is done in very heavy black and the whole outline scarred. there is unfortunately nothing you can do about it. the little bumps should disappear but the raised skin will always be there.

your artist might have dug pretty deap when doing your linework. Its normal to notice some bumps- but raised lines like that are either your fault during its healing process (which you stated and did everything fine) or your artist wasnt doing something right

Your should give them a call

your artist went to too deep with the needle, theres nothing u can do....i also know people who are allergic to some of the inks they use and the same thing happened to them, the tat healed, and then raised....if u dont have a lot of allergies then ur artist was being way too rough...especially if you have sensitive skin

It sounds like scar tissue. I have one tattoo like that. After 10 years it still raised. There probably isn't anything you can do about it.

Keep doing what your tat artist said and it should heal. I've heard of tattoos doing that and I assume it is normal (I don't have one...hate needles!)
