A point often lost in the debate over border security and illegal immigration is that many of the laws necessary to fix the problem are already on the books, but federal authorities have decided for political reasons not to enforce them.

Today, there are approximately 15,000 employees in the entire Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the primary agency responsible for finding and detaining millions of persons here illegally. There are, by comparison, approximately 700,000 state and local law enforcement officials, but in urban centers like New York and San Francisco they are barred from cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities.

This problem must be fixed before putting out the welcome mat for tens of millions of people who first broke the law to enter the country and continue to break our laws by staying here illegally.

Police should not be asked to find and arrest illegals, they should be ORDERED to find and arrest illegals.

The police have their priorities set by law, to protect and serve the citizens in their jurisdiction, With all the criminals on the loose and organized crime operating all over the US. They need to stick to the responsibility for which they were formed, fighting crime. Immigration law has its own enforcement units that have been increased drastically the last couple of decades, they are trained to do their job. Maricopa County, sheriff and his volunteers are not trained to do this job and they have lied about the ICE hold , the idiots put the reason for his detention on the booking report and then deny that was the only reason he was detained. The fail to show valid ID was in his belonging that were placed in his folder of personal belongings, when he was booked. I was born (71 years ago ) and raised in Arizona and am all to aware of the differential treatment/ discrimination of Arizona police agency's. No American Citizen should have to prove to these Keystone cops that they are U.S. Citizens, much less serve time in jail for the police incompetence. I hope they file a lawsuit against the police for discrimination and false imprisonment.

Depends on how you see it. If they are "real" criminals. eg. murderers, rapist, thieves and drug dealers. Then yes they should enforce. But when you waste your time with simply traffic infractions or domestic disputes and go out of your way to check immigration status; the problem becomes bigger and you fix nothing. IF you spend time and energy trying to enforce certain laws that won't help society as a whole, you've wasted your time and tax payer's money. Why not instead fight real crime?? The system is already stretched out far too thin as it is, giving that duty alone to state and local police would probably be an inconvenience to them IMO.

Yes, police should be able to enforce the law. I don't think it should matter what agency is "responsible" for it. Police regularly arrest people for drugs and gun violations and don't just leave it up to the ATF. (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) Why should immigration be any different?

Most definately! And if they are fired upon, they shopuld be allowed to fire back without reprecussions from a$$hole attorney Johnny Sutton. Johnny is the "man" that put Ramos & Compean in jail for doing their jobs. And they wonder why the Border Patrol has trouble getting new recruits. I can't wait for this administartion of retards and cowards to get the hell out of "Dodge City"

We don't need selective law enforcement. When a law enforcement officer sees a law being violated in their jurisdiction they should arrest or detain the violator. Lock them up and send them back, to wherever. Nigeria, South America or Mexico.

Isn't it a violation of the oath taken by all law enforcement to enforce and uphold the law if a police officer ignores a known violation or begins to selectively choose what laws to enforce?

ONLY IF IN THE COURSE OF THEIR NORMAL DUTY THEY BECOME INVOLVED IN OR WITH A CLEARCUT CASE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. IN MY OPINION THE POLICE, IF THEY ARE DOING THEIR JOB ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH TO DO. I DO BELIEVE SOME ONE SHOULD AND MUST STOP THE FLOOD OF ILLEGALS CROSSING OUR BORDERS. IT'S CLEAR OUR PRESENT PRESIDENT WILL DO NOTHING. AND I'M NOT SURE IF ANYONE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OR CONGRESS OR THE SENATE IS WILLING TO TACKLE THE JOB. MIGHT COST THEM VOTES DON'T YOU KNOW.

Since the police are supposed to be "law enforcement" I see no reason why they should enforce other laws and not immigration laws.
