It means that the Law was given to show us just how sinful we really are (Romans 5:20-21)

But Christ has freed us from the curse of the Law....having become the curse for us on the cross.

Then when He rose from the dead, death was defeated.....and you and I have that same promise someday waiting for us.

The law was set aside at Jesus' resurrection. Jesus, in the "sermon on the mount," PREDICTED the end of the law.

Jesus said he didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. (Matt 5:17) The effect was the same. Once fulfilled it was no longer in effect. THE VERY NEXT VERSE, MATTHEW 5:18, LOOKS FORWARD TO THE TIME WHEN THE LAW WOULD BE SET ASIDE. "...Not even the smallest stroke of a pen will disappear from the Law UNTIL EVERYTHING IS COMPLETED." This “UNTIL” clause reinforces the temporary nature of the law. IT ONLY MAKES SENSE WHEN WE UNDERSTAND THAT IT WAS INTENDED FROM THE BEGINNING TO BE SET ASIDE.

On the cross, Jesus' last recorded saying, "It is finished," is an important milestone. Because of Jesus life, Satan had been defeated. The law was finished and would no longer stand between God and mankind.

Ephesians 2:15 Through his body on the cross, Christ put an end to the LAW WITH ALL ITS COMMANDS AND RULES. He wanted to create one new group of people out of the two. He wanted to make peace between them.

Colossians 2:14 He wiped out the written Law with its rules. The Law was against us. It opposed us. He took it away and nailed it to the cross.

Galatians 2:16 ...No one can be made right with God by obeying the law.

Galatians 2:21 ...What if a person could become right with God by obeying the law? Then Christ died for nothing!

Romans 3:20 So it can’t be said that anyone will be made right with God by obeying the law. Not at all! The law makes us more aware of our sin. 21 But now God has shown us how to become right with him. The Law and the Prophets give witness to this. It has nothing to do with obeying the law.

Galatians 5:4 Some of you are trying to be made right with God by obeying the law. You have been separated from Christ. You have fallen away from God’s grace... The ONLY verse that talks about falling from grace, and they did it by trying to follow the law!

The 10 commandments along with the rest of the law ("commands and rules" from Ephesians 2:15) were "set aside" when they were fulfilled or completed at Jesus' resurrection. We are no longer bound by that law.

Those who are in Christ Jesus, those that are truly His, the ones that believe that Jesus is Lord and that God has raised Him from the dead are free from the law. That meaning, that free from the God's judgement of being condemned. Fullfilling the law perfectly is what God requires, and this was accomplished through Jesus Christ, the only one who could perfectly fulfill it. This is why Jesus said, think that I have not come to abolish the law, I came not to abolish but to fulfill. The law was given so that we would have knowledge of sin. Sin cannot stand before God, therefore the righteousness that Jesus earned is given to them that truly are born again with the Spirit, not to ones who do not mean it in their hearts. Grace is given much, but there must be an effort to change and turn from what displeases God. Human law is not in mind here, it is the law of God. Free from the law means free from the judgement of God when this life ends. The ones that are truly His are free from this. God searches all hearts, and knows who is His. That being said, we are still expected to follow the law. The ones that are in Christ will want to.

It was difficult if not impossible for man to obey the law by his own effort to attain righteousness and justification before God.The animal sacrifices under the law covered man's sins but cannot wash away man's sins as the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross has done. Jesus by His sacrifice on the cross fulfilled the law for man by redeeming him from all his sins and by giving man His righteousness. Jesus at the same time redeem man from the curse (all judgment) of the law and qualified man for all the blessings available under the the law. Man by grace and in faith have now all the spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus without him having to obey the law to obtain them. This does not mean that Christians do not obey the law of the land.

It means that we are saved by grace through faith. Nobody is able to keep the law. We die to ourselves and are reborn as a child of GOD. Then the Holy Spirit starts to transform us into the image of Jesus. The point is that we can do nothing to earn this. It just happens.
The law is to show us what is required by GOD if we were to earn his favor.

Rom 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Jesus christ came to die for us thereby removing the curse that adam put on us when he sinned, this curse is all about punshment and at the end, HELL! his blood removed all curses that is why there is no more need to sacrifice any animal for their blood and the cleansing of sins.
note that God was not talking about the laws of the government in a society, like no armed robbery or furgery, but laws that allow gay and lesbianism are not God's laws at all. before you read the bible, pray and tell God to explain to you and he sure will!

"For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all."

That is the meaning.

He did not mean the law of the land because it says "obey the governing authorities" Of course an exception is made only for preaching the gospel of Christ to this rule. The law he is speaking of is the Law of the Old Testemant. We are not justified by keeping God's laws but Justified by faith in Jesus Christ. However, as we "walk by the spirit' and follow him we will wind up fullfilling the law because that's what he will lead us to do. It's kind of hard to explain in a short paragraph.

Romans 8
Life Through the Spirit
1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,[a] 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature,[b] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.[c] And so he condemned sin in sinful man,[d] 4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man[e] is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the sinful mind[f] is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.[g] And by him we cry, "Abba,[h] Father." 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
