Relationships are complex and can have many 'issues' attached to them. It sounds like attachment and/or committment are the salient factors in this case as you say he has already gone on more than one date and 'slept over at her house' indicating that this male friend does demonstrate more than a passing interest. It may take some time (perhaps therapy, etc.) to uncover the related problems and to be able to work out the challenges but it would be worth everything invested in the end to have the opportunity to share life with the right person -- whomever (s)he might be.

wants to keep his relationship on a low key and not act or get too excited ahead of time. Does not want to get hopes up and is not ready to discuss the topic. Waiting it out to see if meant to be. Does not feel the need to talk about the girl still decided if likes her so better flip a coin and find out. Or simply thinks is know ones business and do sent have to say anything.

He might be embarrassed about not having a girlfriend and is making it up so as not to feel left out. Some people just do that

he is taking things slowly and does not want to make her out to be something she is not... Or, he dosnt know how he feels about her yet, so is being guarded with what he shares. Just give him time, let him spend more time with the new woman, and dont pressure him for details
