I bought a clock for my nephew's christening, it was hand painted with bears and rabbits and other such baby stuff on it.
It was completely different to all the other crap that got bought, I mean what need does a baby have for silver ware ? LOL

I just had my daughter baptized/christened as well. Usually you give money. Only because it's not a birthday, it's not a baby shower, it's a christening. Kinda like a wedding reception because the family usually orders food and stuff. So money will go either towards the cost of the food or to some sort of savings accoutn for the baby. We're opening her first savings account! That's what we're doing with the $255 (canadian funds) we're doing with it! Hope this helps!

Something which will appreciate in value. For example, an antique toy (Hornby model train, teddy bear, old Rupert Bear annual) - these can be quite expensive but it's fun shopping around. Or what about going to a good wine shop and asking about buying a wine or spirit which will be good to drink when the child is 18. You'll probably need to go to an independent shop where there is somebody to give you decent advice about this.

How much cash are you willing to part with?
You could always get something for the parents instead, that would be different as everyone buys for baby and its the parents that go without.
That would be original.

You could get them a nice silver photo frame with the baby's name and birthday engraved on it, or a premium bond would be a good investment for when they are grown up.

I am with Barbara B, asking the parents is the safest bet. you could always include a little second gift as well--anything from a little cross to something silly.
I just asked one of my favorite girls--Amanda suggested a kids bible if the parents think it would be appropriate.

Ask Mom/Dad what they would like baby to receive as Christening gifts.
A savings bond
Child's Bible or book of Bible bedtime stories
Soft, warm blankie with sheep on it - embroider The Lord is My Shepherd, I shall not want." on it.

You could always make them something - I'm currently doing two embroidered birth samplers for babies, for example.
If you're not into that sort of thing, you could always name a star after them. That'd be different! You can get details from:
http://www.starregistry.co.uk/
That's pretty cool, IMHO.
