We have a 117lb Rott/Lab mix and he's already jumped a 4 ft chain-link fence. We were going to try an electric fence but have been told that, due to the thick muscles around his neck, he will not feel the shock. Is this true? We prefer not to use a privacy fence since we are surrounded by beautiful hills and trees. We can spend up to $5,000. Thanks for your help.

Let me offer some advice on a Rott. Is he an outside dog? If he is that is not a good thing. That is a set up for a possibly dangerous situation. You need to also check with your city if you live in town. They might have strict regulations on the height of a fence. Never leave a Rott outside by himself EVER. Never chain them up unless it is for a short period of time and you are out there to monitor him.

I would try obediance. My dog is 106lb pure bred and is still growing. I have only caught him once with his paws on the fence. It was quickly corrected. You tell him "OFF" in a stern voice. Once he does that Tell him good " OFF" and give him a treat. It will take a few days of diligient work on this behavior and you should be able to nip it in the bud. He needs to know that you two are the boss.

Again NEVER leave a Rott outside unattended until you know 100% that he will not jump that fence. Always keep him in view. If I can be of more help let me know.

My 3 rotties are over 115 lbs what i found best and not harmful is i put a 7 foot chain link fence ... put 1 foot in the ground with concrete that way they cant dig out and also they cant climb and its safe for them. Electric fence shocks them, In my opinion the electric wouldn't be in my options. .. Chain .. wood privacy ... just bring inside. Although with mine they know to stay in the yard .. Just takes training and obedience time

You know your dog better than us! If he can jump a 4-foot fence then common sense says you should get a higher fence.

If you don't want to get a higher/privacy fence, then don't leave your dog outside alone unleashed.
