I have this major part-time job opportunity and they wanted me to "dress smart". I am meeting with top executives so I don't want to mess up by wearing too much business-like clothing or something.

I am a student in College (not in business school) and this is the first time I'll be doing this kind of thing.

A woman going for a professional interview should always wear a skirt suit - not pants. It is a little traditional but that is still how it is now a days.

You stay with the colors black, navy or brown for a suit. A nice button down collared shirt (you can add some of your personality with this like an interesting color or some ruffles along the buttons - not too much though).

Pantyhose is a must and no open toed shoes. Low heels.

No perfume or a very slight pleasant scent and no jewelry only maybe studded diamond earrings or a delicate necklace.

Hair neat and preferably up in a bun or ponytail.

A firm handshake is always refreshing. And don't be afraid to show some personality by commenting on the weather or the building's architecture, etc.

Make sure to have a good breakfast and have a mint before the interview. Don't smoke right before the interview either (cigarettes).

PS - Don't ask anyone their ethnicity. Don't answer your cel phone - just keep it off.

Define Dress

dress smart means anything that isnt formal and isnt casual.
wear light make up and try not to wear bright nail polish on your hands.
hair should be away from the face.

Dressing smart means you aren't showing too much skin (no-no to plunging necklines, sleeveless tops), business-like, but not business suits.

What you can wear:
Collared shirts in neutral colours
feminine blouse that aren't too distracting
Slacks
Skirts below the knees
closed toe shoe
chic dresses
minimal jewerly (pearls, stud, a watch is fine)
*avoid loud colours

what you should NOT wear
t-shirts
jeans
mini skirts or skirts above the knees
open toed heels
college sports jacket

you may bring a blazer but dont bring a coat.
you may wear stockings or pantyhose.

They key is to look decent and professional.

I would say that if you're meeting with executives, you should wear business attire. If I were told to dress smart, I would wear a my nicest suit and look sharp. I would have my hair nicely styled, wear minimal (natural) makeup, nice jewelry and a little perfume.

If you go to msn.com, they have a lot of articles on their career builder section. I've found many of them to be very helpful when I'm getting ready for an interview.

Good luck!

Dress Smart - means dress conservatively.

Actually, business attire is exactly what they want to see - especially for the interview.

For Ladies: a conservative blouse and knee-length or longer skirt or dress you would be seen in a conservative church and sensible shoes.

For Gentlemen: Khaki trousers, sports jacket, button shirt, tie and oxfords or loafers.

Body art: Remove (yes, take them out!) piercings and cover tattoos (yes, this means opaque makeup - men included). No, you can't put a band-aid over your eye-brow piercing and yes, this means removing tongue piercings as well. If your belly button is pierced, wear a blouse/shirt long enough to cover it - or remove the bauble.

Other "please don'ts" Arty-trendy clothes, odd hair cuts - especially with odd colors, thick heavy makeup, short hemlines, deeply cut necklines, tee-shirts with sayings on them,

When you were a kid, do you remember the school secretary - or the pastor of a rather conservative church? Dress like them.

if u are not given a dressing code then u should always dress in a way u fill comfortable with not exposing the essential part of your body. Or take a look around the place, what kind of dress is common there, like that u get to know what they mean by to dressing smart.

No jeans unless the invitation says "Yee Haw! Me and my pard is gonna get hitched!" For casual dress just forget the ball gowns and cocktail dresses... I'd say dress like you're going on a first date with someone you'd like to impress but you don't know where he's going to take you :) The skirt and top sounds fine :)

I don't think I would wear blue jeans. Wear what you would wear to church on a casual Sunday. I think a nice skirt and top is fine. Or a nice summer dress. You could probably even do dress pants and a nice top if you did not want to wear a skirt. Have fun! :)

If you're meeting with top executives, dress like one. You can't be too business-y. Dress smart means dress appropriately to the situation -- and this situation is very business-like. A suit if you have one; dress pants/.skirt, top and jacket if you don't. Shined shoes and hose. No sandals, flip-flops, etc.
