SORRY, I KNOW NONE CAN SAY IN WHICH YEAR, WHAT I WANT IS AN APPROXIMATE DATE.

(It is so sad that an answer can be edited and a question cannot be - Read the above "IN WHEN" as "WHEN)

Historically, Traditionally are not the answer to the question.

<> is right in saying that "people rationalize things to fit their belief structure." She deserves a pat on the back.

<> has a point. Yes, if John was at least 30 years in AD 30, we cannot imagine that he would have been in peak health or may have good memory to write a complex book by the time he was 90-96! In fact some of the church historians state that he was hardly able to make out fellow brethren by AD 90s.

<> has a point let us not be trapped by traditions.

HATS OFF TO JANA 11
***************************
Yes, her proofs are not strong.

It is generally agreed that Paul was killed in AD 64.

Look at 2 Corinthians written any time before the death of Paul, and in the 12th chapter he tells about a "man in Christ" who was taken to third heaven!

Many say the man is Paul himself! But read verse

2Co 12:5 of such a one will I glory: but on mine own behalf I will not glory, save in my weaknesses.

Here Paul figuratively says it is impossible for him to boast (will anyone boast about weaknesses? He He I am a hunch back! I am blind ha, ha!)

So it is not himself that he is talking about.

And in the entire Bible John is the only person who states that he has seen "new heaven". Rev 21:1 & 2

So if paul knows that John was taken to heaven 14 years before Pauls writing, then Revelation must have been written at least by 50 AD!

Thank you all!

It had have been before the Disporia in A.D. 70 because there were no references to it in that book unless it was occuring while John was on the Island of Patmos and he was unaware due to his banishment. As Revelations prophecies about that event in a near/far casting prophecy then I think it had not occured. As there are letters from the Angels - messengers being sent to the 7 Churches of Asia Minor then it had to have been after Paul had established those churches so...between whenever those times were. I can't give'um to ya cuz that would incite me to look stuff up that you don't want lookedup. How'd I do? What's a Ya, HeHe sort of question and how do you mercilessly delete them? I have strong scriptural points but man, do I really want to drag all that scripture up and copy and paste it? No...I really don't.. so check out Rev 11 ~ still curiously examining it but as it relates to the KJV of the Bible becoming so in 1611 and charges the Roman Catholic Church with apostasy in supressing scripture so you know it was before the establishment of that establishment. That's all I got for ya...what's next? Love in Christ, ~J~

I believe you are asking when the Book of Revelation was written.
Revelation was written by John. Traditionally this has been considered John the apostle, son of Zebedee, despite the style being somewhat different from John's other New Testament books. [John 1:4, 22:8, 9, and Intro to 1 John]. The fact that John was a prisoner on Patmos, previously boiled in oil, and given an apocalyptic vision by God may account for this difference in style.
Revelation was written when Christians were threatened by Rome to recant their faith and submit to the cult of emperor worship. Some have dated the book to Nero's persecution of the Christians after the burning of Rome in 64 A.D. However, the church Father Irenaeus, other early Christian writers, and moder scholars accept the more probable date range as the 90's A.D. This was during the harsh reign of Domitian (81-96 A.D.). This range agrees better with the picture of complacency and defection of the churches, evidenced in Rev. chapters 2 and 3.

Unfortunately, it *cannot* be dated by what is contained within the book. You could assume that the author is John, 1 of the 12 apostles - but that is *not* claimed in the text, as your question specifies. There is no mention of any emperor by name. The churches in Asia minor were likely not destroyed until the conquest of the Caliphate, at least several centuries after it was written, so that is no help. Thus, it *cannot* be dated from scripture.

I am going to go outside your specifications and mention this from the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary: "According to Iranaeus, a leader of the church in the second century, John saw his revelation near the end of the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian." Whether or not Irenaeus was correct, we know from this that *he* had a copy of Revelation in the 2nd century C.E. Therefore, it can be *definitely* dated to the 2nd century or earlier. That is quite sufficient for me. Most scholars base their date of the mid-90's C.E. from this statement, trusting in Irenaeus' analysis.

From the Bible, I think you'd have to take the names of the churches, and discover when they were destroyed. It would have to be sometime before their destruction.
When was Patmos known as Patmos?
Traditionally, it is dated somewhere between 90 and 96 A.D.
We do know John wrote that it was on the Lord's Day, vs.9,
and was during the time of tribulation. I cannot remember the name of the Roman emperor at that time, but that would narrow it down somewhat, although it was popular with several of them to persecute Christians.

John speaks that he was on the Island of Patmos for speaking the Gospel. This area was a Roman prison. There for, we must assume that Rome had now considered "preaching the Good News" a crime. It would be safe to assume that this would be latter in John's life. So basing this on these two things, I would say John should be at least 60? years old? So I would think he would have been about the same age As Christ, Christ died at 33, so I would say 30 to 40 years after the Crucifixion.

Taz,
From what I remember, John wrote the Book from the Isle of Patmos and had to get the Letter to the Church members thru the hands of the Roman Soldiers who guarded him. To do so, he wrote it using figurative language that they would be unable to recognize. It was primarily a letter of encouragement to them since they were being persecuted Harshly by the Romans at that time. It was written Near the end of his life about 100 AD. Have a wonderful day and a glorious week!
Thank YOU,
Eds

Mark,

1. What is the actual question? Seriously, it's not even framed as a question: "As per Bible when the book of Revelation was written?" (The question mark is automatically generated by YA, btw, so you can't argue that the question mark automatically signifies that it is a question.) Do you understand the concept of grammar at all?

2. How are you going to mercilessly delete anything? You don't have that power. YA frowns upon frivolous reporting, so I wouldn't do that if I were you. (You'd be shooting yourself in the foot.)

3. I claim my 2 points!

I can not give you an exact time but many people believe it was written between 70-90 AD. Near the end of Johns life.

Revelation was written by John in AD 95, which means the book of Revelation describes yet future events of the last days just before Jesus comes back to this earth
