The place to see that is an area called Patpong. You can take the Skytrain there. It's the notorious sex district. And yes your friend wasn't kidding. you can see all kinds of stuff there.

Ok if you are in Bangkok most people would tell you to go see the shows in Patpong ... I personally dont like Patpong because it such a tourist trap and have heard of people being extorted after the shows etc.
I would recommand that you catch a similar show down in Soi Cowboy there is a bar that has it alternating with girls dancings the shows are free as long as you buy a drink (std prices about 150bt) oh the name of the bar - Long Gun. The shows here are better in the sense that its done in a proper bar not some sleazy back room and you dont feel shitty cos you can be there for a drink and not just for the show.

Isn't travelling about broading one's experiences? Unlike some other answerers I take the view that just because I may not approve of something, that doesn't mean I should pretend its not there or find out about it.
Anyway, you can see such shows in Patpong in BKK. The main street for such naughtiness is Patpong Soi 1.
As your questions suggests you have Thai frinds, I would advise taking at least one of them along with you because foreigners going alone are likely to be ripped-off on their drinks bill. If you are with a Thai person, there is much less risk of this happening.

An emphatic NO. It is not worth seeing. I had heard about women doing it also in Tijuana, Mexico and I live 2 hours away and I was not interested. Our driver thought it we might like to see it so we went. It cost like 2-300 baht to enter. The area was dark, out of the way, all there was were Thai men hanging around. It did not feel safe even for me, I am 185 cm tall and around 110 kg. Inside was smoky, poorly lit and you were sitting on a bench seat. And the woman doing the acts was not very pretty nor attractive.
If you really want to see something like that either ask the driver or taxi driver about it if they understand enough english. It was probably in Patpong area that we saw it. It was my first visit to Bangkok and I was still getting acclimated to the sites.
It is not something I tell my friends about when I talk about Thailand.

I went to this kind of show while I was holidaying in Phuket. The hotel's manager told us to see it as it was something not to be missed!! It's call Thai Girl's show or something! Yes, I would say it's very tacky and kind of humiliating (for women at least). The place was seedy and dark in a small alley.
They have these Thai girls performing all kinds of stunts with their private parts!! From shooting ping pong balls to blowing a candle!! I personally find it very degrading for women to do that for a living. I came out from the show feeling disgusted.

I haven't been to Patpong for years so I don't know about the alleged dangers of going there, but ... the shows are pretty "mechanical" and the performers (artists?) look bored, which I guess is understandable as they do the same show several times every night seven days per week.
However, if you consider this a once-in-a-lifetime thing, then go, have a beer/coke, watch the show, and leave.
I once took my (female) cousin and her girlfriend to see such a show and a male strip shows (off Suriwongse Road), which they thought were something DIFFERENT and thus a worthy travel experience.

It's not worth the time. Seen it, and didn't see the point (of doing that). I mean I can't, but what the heck. There're better things to see in Thailand. Sex show in Paris, Picale is better.

are you visiting phuket or bangkok?
if it is phuket, i would definetly reccomend Phuket Fantasea, and the Simon Cabaret.
