It's funny how everytime someone ask about a bike, someone says it's made in China and then it's junk....
MOST of all bikes are made overseas, unless really expensive ones. Even large name companies, Trek, Specialized and such, makes most of their bikes in China and only the top end models in the States.

Without knowing what particular model you are looking at, it is going to be difficult to answer this question. However, for $300, I think you are better served buying a bike in a bike shop than at Walmart or similar stores where Schwinns are currently sold. You will get a better bike built by professionals. When I worked in a shop, I cannot tell you how many department store bikes we would have to reassemble. There goes all the savings.

Schwinns are made in China with low quality components. They ususally break apart in 2 weeks. For $300 you can get a Giant for the 100x the quality and durability and reliability

Not knowing what bike you're talking about no one could tell you. Schwinn has entry level to high end bikes like many companies. A genealization like you state has no answer.

When you consider they are now made in China, and your average bike from Wal Mart for 100 bucks is also made in China - and they probably roll right out of the same factory, just one has a bigger name, what makes it worth $300?

At that price, it's the Specialized Hard Rock XC that's worth the money. If you can't get it at your local bike shop then the GT Aggressor is a reasonably good alternative.
