81!!!
Hendricks owns rights to the # s you listed so he can't keep # 8. Better save you'r Dale E. Jr. Budwiesers cans and other memoriabila.
So sad, his dad made DEI and he is just leaving it. There has to be more to the story than what the press is given.
# 3 will live forever & # 8 will always be remembered as Dale Jr.
I hope he can keep his colors, because his dad's colors where Black white, and red ; Dale Jr. was Red, Black, and white.
What about his brother and his crew cheif? I heard they were still under contract w/ DEI, which means he will have to have a new pitt crew and cheif.
Its funny, when I started answering this Q, there where no answers now there are alot.

Junior has driven car 81 before.
Yes early in his sportsman careen he drove number 81 on the Friday-Saturday short tracks.Even early in his BUSCH career he made starts in car number 81.
Not only these 2 items but Junior fielded a car a few years ago in CUP that was driver a couple of races by John Andretti and it was number 81.
So I'd say 81 is top contender.

I'm a Dale Jr fan true and true, and as a fan, I do not care what his number will be I'm still a fan, I do think its leading towards the 81...When he was out here in fontana, I was right by Marty Smith (nascar insider press guy),when he was interviewing Jr, he said he is sure his fans will be happy, I loved the grin Jr had on his face when he said that, and we know Jr loves his fans.....We will just have to hang tight, whatever his number is...I'm still a fan and always will be.
Go Dale Jr Go...

I just asked a question about WHY he was changing his number so maybe you can help me out with that.
I read in an article that a lot of people think it is going to be 81 which will be good for all the people I know who have 8 tatoos.
Here's a link to the article
http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/blog/nascar_marbles/post/Junior-s-number-game?urn=nascar,44168
I hope it helps, it was on the YAHOO main page a few minutes ago if you can get that link to work.

Sigh! Again.
Robert Yates has said no to the 38. Forget the 83 too.
Why don't we wait till HMS decides to tell us.
Maybe they will save the announcement for Xmas for the fans.

Not sure what possible difference it makes what number he gets. If you're a fan of Jr., then you're a fan of Jr. - not the number.
I mean, unless you have a tattoo and need to add a number before or after the 8, who cares? :p

I think that 38 would be pretty cool, but for some reason I think it will be the 81. He's driven that number before in the passed. 38 would be such a great combination though!
