Taxes are determined by the government, not by a religion. So if a government (Mulsim or otherwise) decided not to tax its people, then there would be no taxes.

But what the Muslim religion does teach (and it was mentioned in the recent video) is that Muslims are forbidden by their religion to charge interest. If they were to load you money they would be able to charge interest. They do, however, still have to pay interest if they borrow money for interest such as from a bank.

A country with a Muslim government will usually have a law against charging interest on any loans banks, credit cards, etc). With the concern in the US over raising interest rates, and sub-prime lending, Bin Laden infered that if the US was a Muslim country, they would not have an interest rate problem.

If course, we would also have no investment capital, and institutions wanting to loan money, so we would be a backwards, third rate, poor nation like all of the Muslim countries of the world.

Muslims have to pay taxes. What Muslim countries do is charge an EXTRA tax on anyone who is not Muslim. Either pay the extra tax, convert to Islam, or be killed. That is what passes for "religious freedom" in Muslim law.

It's not true in America.

I do know that in Islam's early days, Muslims would not always use force for conversions of conquered lands; instead, they would tax non-Muslims. If the non-Muslims' faiths were strong enough, they were well-respected in the community and sometimes even encouraged conversions.

That's not true.

They may have misinterpreted the fact that certain Muslim countries don't have income taxes due to their oil wealth. It's definitely not true that converting to Islam can allow one to avoid paying taxes.

You misinterpereted what he said. All muslims have to pay taxes. Infact, after every year, it is mandatory for every muslim to give away 2.5 % of his wealth to charity (which is like a tax because it is paid to the Zakat Fund of the state).
The basic principle is that if you are a non muslim living in a muslim rules state, you have to pay certain taxes against which the state ensures you can practice your religon without any problems.

I would follow the peaceful route of the Islamic faith, if I could be exempted from paying taxes by doing so. That sounds cool to me. Although, I might have a hard time taking any religion very seriously.

yeah right! if muslims didn't have to pay taxes, there would be a lot of outrage. as far as I know, the only religion that gets out of paying taxes are the Amish who don't have to pay road taxes.. which is kinda dumb because their buggies (with their wooden wheels) are harder on the roads than cars..
