I went into work yesterday with a cold and by the end of the day it was getting worse. The office manager I work with told me that if I wasn't feeling well today to just call out and not push myself to do too much. I still don't feel that great today and I don't want to get everyone contaminated (I work in a small office). I work for my uncle and that makes it worse on me to call out. I feel guilty calling in like I should go to work. I go to work full time and I also am going to college too. I have a class tonight that I have to go to from 4-7 and it's the first class so I can't miss it. But, I would be working from 8:30-3 then right after that going to class.

What should I do?

When you call out sick should I call the office itself when I know the office manager is there? Should I call my uncle who is my boss?

I was just going to call when they are in the office and talk to the office manager and say did you want me to talk to the Dr. and tell him I am going to be out sick today. I would call him directly but I just feel like he gets all aggrevated and would be mad that I am staying out. I think the office manager knows they will be ok with out me being in but he seems to think differently.

You should call both your employer and your college. The best advice is for you to go sick until at least one or two days after you are 100% healthy again. OK, so you don't want to lose money or any study but look at what will happen if you go to work and / or college. The first thing is that you are going to give your virus to all your work colleagues and class mates. They in turn will lose money and lose some study. In the meantime, some will return before they have got rid of the virus and what they are carrying will already have mutated slightly and be a slightly different and stronger strain. They will give it back to you and you will get ill enough to stay off work and college for up to 10 days. The cycle will have begun. Each time you return to work and / or college, you will catch a stronger virus. Breaking the cycle is easy. If people stayed home for a few days, when they have colds and flus, they would recover and need less time off work each year as the virus wouldn't spread. As many people are selfish enough to contaminate everybody that travels on the same reain, bus etc. and everybody at work etc. most people lose a lot of money. It costs the economy £Billions ($Billions) each year because of people not wanting to lose money etc. and each worker loses between two and three weeks wages, bonuses etc. This can all be avoided by people being selfless rather than selfish for a change. Ask your employer if they could set up a sickness scheme that pays a worker their full pay plus a percentage of their bonus if they are genuinely off sick due to colds and flus. In the long term, your employer will save a lot of money by having such a scheme as they will only lose the productivity of one or two employees at any one time rather than lose a high percentage of the workforce two or three times a year, which can be very costly to the employer.

First of all, if you are too sick to go to work and would normally have called in sick if it were any other company, then call in sick to your employer. Second of all, follow the expected protocol when calling in sick. Do your co-workers call the office manager or their respective bosses? If they call the office manager--which I suspect they do since that it probably the person who tracks your hours--then you should follow the same procedure. Calling your uncle only points out to others that you are above the usual procedures because you're related to the owner; not a smart move politically speaking. As far as going to class is concerned, you do what you have to do. If you don't go to work, make sure you're taking the necessary steps to get well--such as rest, liquids, effective medications, possibly seeing the doctor if you're running a fever, etc.--so you only miss a minimal amount of time from work.

Exhibit your concern for fellow workers (and their families) by calling in sick and not going to work. You could be passing on the virus to your co-workers and so on and so forth. Call your direct boss. If that person isn't your uncle, call your uncle, too, but you should let your direct boss know first. It is important that you observe proper protocol.

Yes. If you are poorly do not go into work. The guilt element should be ignored.
When phoning in follow established procedure do not take short cuts because you are working for your uncle; nepotism is a nasty word.
going to work sick puts your colleagues at risk too as you point out.
Always phone in sick.
working too hard is bad for your health.
Take time off regularly through your leave entitlement. working yourself into an early grave will benefit no one!

i think you should tell your uncle (boss) and inform the manager.

i think it;s a good idea to rest at home . then you can recover faster and be more productive the next day . if your really sick i;m sure everyone will understand.

regards

Get well soon!

You were sick yesterday so it isn't like they will think you are faking it so I would stay home. Now if you are calling in sick often (more than once a month) maybe you should tough it out.
