the majority of headaches in the modern world are the consequence of three reasons.
The most common is dehydration. Did you drink enough throughout the day? Drink 3 big glasses of water. (NOT sweet drinks or alcohol). If the headache passes in half an hour to an hour, you'll know it's dehydration.

The second is food allergy. Note the food you eat and see if there's any connection to the times you get the headaches. The most common allergens are milk, cheese, wheat and wheat products, agrumes (oranges, lemons), tomato, different nuts and things with a lot of artificial colours, flavouring and additives (like chewing gums, jelly sweets, fizzy cola drinks...)

The third reason is prolonged concentration on small details, like reading, staring into the computer screen... make sure you have enough light when reading. While working at the computer, make sure there is no source of light BEHIND you, because the reflection in computer screen causes headache.

Headache can also be a result of a bad posture and a pinched nerve in your spine or neck. A visit of a physiotherapist or a chiropractic would be welcome. Especially since you state it's at the back of your neck. Do you stand up for a long time or lean forward? With things like that you put a lot of stress on your spine. If you get stiff back and aching muscles too, it's probably posture. Check your seat, car seat and your bed. You might want something more anatomically shaped.

These are just some natural remedies. I hope it's helpful.

Edit: i just read the answer below me about the apple cider vinegar. I would advise you most strongly against drinking it. My father drank it for JUST ONE year and it completely destroyed his stomach lining and caused a beginning of an ulcer. He needed to go to a strong medication therapy for it to heal.

Sounds like it could be from stress. I used to have headaches alot when I was younger, caused by stress on the job and things going on in the family.

One thing you may want to do is if your pillow is older, get a new one that will support your neck and shoulders more. Older pillows break down and have been known to cause stress on the muscles and also keeps you from getting a good nights rest which can keep you from handling your job better.

You can take Motrin, which is an anti-inflammatory, and that will help relax the muscles and remove any inflammation that builds up day-by-day, causing the muscles to become more sore. Be sure and take it as prescribed so it gets built up in your system ~ don't just wait until you have the headache and take it once or you won't get full benefit from it.

Put heat wraps on the neck/shoulder area to help relax them, then sit back and relax and watch TV or read for a while and get your mind off some of your problems. I buy the Therma Care and use them on my shoulders, feet, ankles and legs whenever I am in bad pain but you can also use a heating pad, just don't lie on it or go to sleep while using it or you could get burnt.

You can also lift weights that will work the shoulder muscles to help stretch the muscles and work out some of the tension.

I got so bad one time that it spread from my neck/shoulders, down my back and I couldn't hardly move at all. I had my brother massage my back and shoulders while I laid on the floor and that helped to "unknot" the muscles. I could turn my head a little after he did that and a couple of days later, all the soreness was gone and I was "back to normal", whatever that is ~ lol

You can also lay in a tub of VERY warm water (as warm as you can take it) and make sure your neck and shoulders are under the water. After about 15 minutes, let some of the water out and put in more hot water (stir the water while you add that so you don't burn yourself) and fill the tub, then submerge your neck and shoulders again. That not only adds moist heat, which is very beneficial to your muscles, it gives you time to relax so you aren't working on anything else. That relaxation will help your heart which is also under a great deal of stress when you go through this.

As far as the ACV that bebee mentioned. Many people believe vinegar to help and some do experience changes but I, for one, cannot take vinegar because:

1) as it builds up in my system, my immune system is affected and I end up with sinus and upper respiratory problems which leads to a lot of infections

2) it causes my joints to hurt more because of my arthritis (have to avoid yeast and sugars, too)

3) it causes my fibromyalgia to flare up and makes my skin sore to the touch when others touch me

I didn't have that problem when I was younger but after I suffered with Epstein Barr Virus for 5 years, I found those foods (and others) were the culprits that kept me extremely ill all that time. You can try it and see if it helps but if you notice other problems, quit taking it for a while and see if those problems go away.

Anyway, that's my input :) I know you are stressed at work so try to find ways to relax and hopefully, some of the above ideas will help, too.

Sounds like a tension headache. Put ice on it. A good massage also helps. Try pressure under the 'bumps' at the back of the neck where the muscles attach. find out what is making you so tense & do relaxation exercises like slow, deep breathhing. Good luck!

First get a nice warm drink, preferably with a little sugar in it. NOT artificial sweetener, but honey is good, too. Hot lemonade is my drink of choice.

Drink it down, then gently massage your neck and shoulders. You can gently push your head so the neck pops, and sometimes that helps.

If that doesn't work, try a nap -- just for 10 to 20 minutes.

Still not helping or you can't sleep, go for the painkillers.

Anything more serious than that, you should see a doctor.

You could message your neck. And put some icy hot on it. Then you can also put a heating pad under your neck. Take somepain med for neck pain. That should help it. And if it does not help. You might need to go to the doctor and get some medication that will help you a lot better. But first try pain med and icy hot with heat pad.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

Hi, sorry you are having headaches, it sounds like a tension or stress headache. take an aspirin, or a Tylenol or another pain reliever. then try a relaxing technique, like meditating, praying, or a self relaxing technique by telling yourself to relax yourself by body part..like I'm relaxing my toes and feet... now i am relaxing my calves, feet and toes, now i am relaxing my thighs, calf's, feet and toes, and so on.. if they come on suddenly, and very severe, you may need to see a Dr. hope your headaches go away and never come back. feel good..
