There is a simpler reason why there cannot be peace in Iraq.

The Iraqis do not want it.

The country has been teetering on the brink of civil war ever since the US invasion. The Shiites and Sunnis blow up each other's shrines every few days and have death squads and militias patrolling their streets killing each other. The Kurds want autonomy in the north, but are opposed by both other groups who do not want to give up the northern oil revenue.

The only things that can prevent a full scale Iraqi civil war are a powerful dictatorship like Saddam's and foreign occupation. However, both solutions only delay the inevitable.

Iraq should have never been formed as one country. The three sects will never be happy together.

At this point, the US should withdraw from Iraq and allow the civil war. It is what the Iraqis and the rest of the world want. It is also inevitable. Extending the US presence in Iraq is a futile waste of money which accomplishes nothing.

The US should withdraw from Iraq. Now.

Oh, yes, it all comes down to those big bad, greedy Americans again, doesn't it? The last I heard it was the Iraqi leadership that is failing to equitably divide oil revenues amongst its own people.
How can it be that anyone wants to keep a part of that place? As far as China and Russia are concerned, many have a mistaken view of just how far free enterprise has taken those two countries and how jealously they will cling to acceptable relations with others in order to maintain what they have newly found.

The main focus of Russia and China is not imperialistic, at the moment. In fact, it would defeat their interests to come into Iraq, "guns blazing."

Their current strategy is economic / infrastructure development. Russia used to be a bit more expansive, but it collapsed under the weight of it all and had to start over with a new strategy.

Honestly, I doubt what you say is true at all. It is a pretty bad situation for other reasons, though.

The Russians have 19 Bombers, 14 of which fly and are 30 years old. China would have trouble with Taiwan and Japan. Whose afraid of the big bad wolf?
I am sure that the Russians and Chinese are aware of mutually assured destruction. This is cold war rhetoric. Russia and China have too much to lose, now that they actually have a stake in prosperity to jeopardize it.
Besides, I am sure Iraq is a no fly zone AND that the populations of either nation (and others) would stand for a larger war..

Eh, Russia and China aren't ready for a full-scale war with the US. They'll keep undermining the US, and using any chance they get to make us look like the bad guy to the EU and the rest of the world. That war isn't coming for at least 40 years.

The only answer is for the US to sponsor creating a UN state where all prcoeeds from the oil production are first used for the infrastructure of the country creating employment to exploit the energy resources in the country and then plow the remainder of the money into balancing the UN budget and providing poverty nations with food, etc...otherwise, the area will continue to be a war zone, just like it has been for thousands of years...

and see who supported that

The Land Letter was a letter sent to President George W. Bush by five evangelical Christian leaders on October 3, 2002 which outlined their theological support for a just war pre-emptive invasion of Iraq. The letter was written by Richard D. Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. It was co-signed by Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries, Bill Bright, chairman of Campus Crusade for Christ, James Kennedy, president of Coral Ridge Ministries, and Carl D. Herbster, president of the American Association of Christian Schools.

No. The war is a no win situation because victory requires a goal. As one army col. put it, iraq is a deployment in search of a mission. Can we find a reasonable goal in iraq? No.

Why not? Because the terrorists want us tied down in a guerrilla war that allows them to challenge us directly.

Please, the Iraq war is a no win situation because it's a frickin' WAR. Nobody wins at war, both sides lose, one just loses more.

And please get a grip on reality. Russia doesn't have the man/fire power to come in "guns blazing" and China is more interested in economic growth to risk losing all that.

Seriously GET A GRIP.

I think you may be right. Certainly the real objective of the occupation is to establish an oil colony.

Perhaps it's time to stop calling this a war. The U.S. is not at war with Iraq. The war is long over. This is an occupation.
