I've never worked in a bar & bistro before and have an interview in a week. What does one need to know when working in a bar? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would think knowledge of mixing drinks would be good.. depending on what they serve there..
How to deal with customers and how to carry a tray loaded with stuff..
How to handle people who get out of hand, either by coming on to you or getting drunk..
How to work a cash register
What you are suppose to wear, discuss this as its important.
Good Manners never hurt either.
And how to keep smiling all through your shift helps.. lol
PS>> nomatter what.. wear good shoes.. :)

Just remember to be professional, keep your personal life out of the bistro, try not to kill the cook or the bartender, and smile as tho your tips depended on it. Always go back and ask if everything is OK without hovering. Usually you track in a restaurant and see how it works. They will explain the basics and you will learn to remember all things while giving great service. On the street never say hello to someone you saw in the Bistro unless they acknowledge you first. Maybe they weren't supposed to be there. . .You can make good money at the right place. Don't let anyone abuse you. You will get very good at keeping people in the place you want them and what you learn will serve you throughout your life. You will always be able to read people.

You need to know that human relations are above all. A customer wants to feel at home with you and your services. Indulge in conversation. Become more personal with your clients. I once continued to invest in a product, not because I enjoyed it or needed it, but because the conversations I had with one of the employees were entertaining to me. I tipped well. You may be asking yourself, why did I keep going back? Not everyone goes to a restaurant to eat.....You see. I worked as a service manager of an automotive shop when I was younger. I made it a point to get to know each customer. I'd ask them how their day was, how they're doing. A client asked me one day to lat-move to his company. Human relations department.
Back to the Bar/Bistro. Waitressing will be fast paced but good to your pocket. Cooking is hot and aggravating. Hosting is boring and unforgiving of your financial situation. Supervising is for those who can't advance in the world past franchising. You'll love it. Just smile, be yourself, and get to know those you interact with. Good luck.

a good general knowledge of a little bit of anything and everything and/or the ability to BS your way through a conversation w/ people. a good sense of personal security, things can turn bad in an instant in a bar. knowledge of drinks, although bar etiquette is that if you order it, you should know whats in it. its never a bad thing to know something about the sports going on that day/night/weekend, especially pro sports. being able to multi-task with ease. being able to move quickly and keep people happy. ultimately, its something that everyone that works in a bar develops their own technique over time, but you will need to be able to deal with multiple people at one time, and remember who gets what, and where that person is/was at

Many have commented on how useful it is, while working in a bar. to have a through knowledge of quantum mechanics. It seems vigorous debates over cosmology come up with regularity once people start drinking.

It would be a good idea to know what the laws are for serving alcohol besides just age factor. See if there are laws that protect you in any given situation. Good luck!

It depends on what your going to be doing. Are you going to be a bartender? if so then you need to know how to make drinks. If your going to be serving then you probably need some experience as a waitress.
