Italian is not universal at all, German is a bit difficult, and a bit more universal than Italian, and Japanese is suppose to be the most difficult one to learn. So depending on your ambition and dedication to learn another language, Spanish is as universal as English and fairly easy to learn, French is harder than Spanish, but used somewhat around the world. Hard decision, but if you just need a class, and never really plan to use it (you don't retain what you learn unless you are in a situation to use the language), you can take whatever you like, but if you want to learn something you think your future life will have use for, pick one that applies.

Japanese is extremely difficult for an English speaker so you have to have a very good reason for learning it.
Italian is much more difficult to learn than Spanish; the people here who say they're about the same obviously have not done both of them.
French and German are easier than Italian, believe it or not, and both are more widespread.
Basic Spanish is fairly easy, but living in Southern California as I do hearing it every day could make that comment biased.
Russian and Portuguese are also hard for an English speaker and you need a good reason for studying those too.

Let's face it Japanese is spoken in Japan ONLY, German in Germany ONLY, Italian in Italy ONLY
so it's really up to you.........
German is a lot easier to learn for an English speaker, Italian and Japanese are not.
Japanese is not that hard, don't get fooled by the different alphabets!!!
Italian is the hardest amongst all the romance languages: pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary are pretty hard for an English speaker, but it has the most wonderful and 'romantic' literature!!
Well Japanese has no literary scenario I sometimes think of it as a vain language in this field.
German has had some of the greatest authors history has ever known but seriously, do you wanna compare it with the language of love?
So go for it! Go for Italian and you won't regret it!!

I would suggest you Italian. To learn Japanese is very very difficult...
German is a bit similiar to English. Italian not. But Italian is a wonderful language!
If you would take German or Italian you can ask me if you have questions...I speak those languages. My mother-tongue is German and since 2 1/2 years I know also Italian...

You sound like you're the most interested in Italian. If you learn that language, you can also pick up French and Spanish, since both are closely related. Japanese belongs to another language group entirely so learning it will be more difficult than the others. As for German, only learn it if you really want to and it sounds like you're not really that interested in it.

i would pick German, because
the best chocolate is in Belgium, and German is one of their national languages. So you can order great chocolate in Belgium, and understand what they are talking about.
