Everyone once in a while (including right now), I get this extremely uncomfortable stomach pain, kind of shooting pains throughout my lower abdomen. Sometimes it keeps me awake, and at times I can't move a muscle in my body because it hurts so bad. I know this isn't the most ladylike thing, but it is occasionally accompanied by gas. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

It could be several things. The most extreme case would be a stomach ulcer. This is when the acid in your stomach is allowed to eat through your stomach lining due to some invading bacteria. Another possibility is that you ate something that is causing the bacteria in your intestine to react in a non-agreeable way. An example of this are those who are lactose intolerant. This is where the bacteria in the intestines have trouble breaking down the sugar lactose, causing a gas build up, which would explain your pain and excess gas. My suggestion is that if the pain persists over a day, go to the emergency room and have them check it out....better safe than sorry.

I would suggest you have a food allergy perhaps, or a yeast infection in your stomach both of which are easily treatable.
SOme times we can also get lil bugs in out tum which interfere in normal digestive processes.
There is also a condition called Celiacs disease but there are other symptoms with that depending on your other symptoms.
Also IBS (irritable bowl syndrome) which can be controlled with lifestyle and nutrition therapy.
You need to be diagnosed. A naturopath or physician can do this but look these things up on the net on reputable sights to get a clearer picture of other symptoms you may have eg stress, loose stools, constipation, heart burn ect

It sounds like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or Diverticulitis. I have this too and the way I control mine is to eat a low fat diet. Ask your doctor to refer you for some tests and go from there.
As for the cramps...a hot water bottle or a warm bath should help along with some painkillers.

Hope you feel better soon
