Because Copernican astronomy went against the teachings of the Bible. In the meantime the Church has somewhat progressed by not taking the Bible literally.

The RC church considered itself to be the ultimate authority on spiritual and scientific matters, probably on ALL matters.

This is still taught by the saying 'the infalibility of the pope'

Unfortunately by seeing what they believe in and what they do you can see that they are not true Christians , not following the Bible , not infallible , and NOT backed by God.

galileo did not have that right, the church never granted it. it is a mistake to judge history by modern standards. but fortunately for everyone, the church's power is no longer absolute.
