are releasing into the atmosphere? They say that one cargo ship puts out as much pollution per trip across the ocean that 350,000 vehicles do, anyone have any ideas on how to eliminate this pollution from the cargo ships?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Replace the diesel engines with nuclear reactors.

Might only be an option for new ships considering the likely redesign that'll be required but it'd result in ships that can go faster, carry more and don't need to worry about whether the port they go to has good quality fuel.

Sailing ships might be an option in some cases but they lack the controllability for most non-recreational purposes, they were only used a long time ago because that was all that was available, commercial sailing ships will compete just as well with nuclear powered ships as they did with steam powered ships (i.e. not well at all).

Diesel is VERY efficient compared with gas, coal, or other fuels.

Which is more efficient? Gas hybrid or diesel hybrid (like train locomotives). For equivalent capacity, diesel is much more efficient.

There's an effort in California to provide electrical connections when ships are docked at port. Someone thinks the electric utilities which burn diesel are different than the onboard ship generators which burn diesel.

Who comes up with this stuff??

Sail powered ships are not practical and are dangerous. Imagine an oil tanker that gets blown off course? Or a container ship that is several football fields long?

They actually could go back to sails. Or a combination of sails and other propulsion.

Apparently, transporting cargo Via container ship is one of the most fuel efficient (and low polluting) means of getting goods from point A to point B. Everything else (Trucks, Planes, etc) requires more fuel per pound per mile.

That said, there is no reason improvements couldn't be made. A combination of vertical windmills generating electricity for an electric motor (more torque than combustion) as well as alternative fuels (algae bio diesel made at sea?) could possibly be a benefit to the industry of shipping.
