No, not in the least. It can actually HELP you grow if your bones are still growing.
By using weight bearing exercises, it encourages your bones to grow.

The only way to actually stunt you growth is if you break or fracture a bone, or take steroids (which is probably what your mom read or heard about... maybe relating to testosterone).

NO it will not stunt your growth! I think that your mother is afraid that you'll get hurt. As long as who ever is teaching the class knows what they are doing and makes sure that some one is there to spot you while you're lifting the weights and to make sure that you don't use a weight that is to heavy for you. And to make sure that you're lifting a weight that is right for your weight and size to start with you should be fine. If she's worried have her talk to the coach he should be able to reassure her that you'll be fine.

The idea that lifting weights will stunt your growth is a common myth that has no scientific or medical evidence to back it up. Injuries only occur when lifting is done incorrectly or an inappropriate amount of weight is used. It's good that you're taking this class because hopefully you'll be shown how to lift correctly, safely and effectively by an experienced adult.

You could show your mom this article and perhaps it will put her mind at ease:

It contains facts backed by scientific studies regarding the safety of weight training, especially when compared to how injurious other sports are.

Here's more info for you to peruse for your interest and perhaps for your mom's:

Good luck and welcome to the sport!

No , it is very healthy.
The problem is when it is over done, and to much stress is put upon he body, but even then it is not guaranteed to stunt growth.
The only connection in this is the use of steroids, or sterols, that have liked growth stunt, to wight lifting, and if you do not use them, you should not have to worry.

there is not one piece of scientific data that supports claims that resistance training stunts the growth of the human skeletal system. there never has been and there never will be.

potentially it can, but only if you go to failure. weight lifting causes a hardening of plates which in adults promotes muscle growth, but in minors can limit the amount of growth able to be gained from the body. if you keep your reps up around 10 per set then there shouldn't be any problems. never lift weight that gets you less reps than that.
