This happens with open-faced/bait-caster reels. When casting bait-casters, it is important to maintain pressure on the spool to regulate how fast the spool spins. If it spins faster than line is leaving the end of the rod it will loosen, collect, and make a mess of the line on the spool. Try holding a rod with a weight on it, drop the line with your thumb on the spool, you should be able to drop it smoothly to the floor. Drop it w/out your thumb on the spool. That is called a backlash, also referred to as a "bird nest". They can be horrendous when trying to undo the worst ones. I've actually seen it when people have to re-line their reels b/c of such a bad back lash.

backlash/birds nest etc. happens with open faced reels, when the spool is traveling faster then the line going off the reel. This in turn creates a over run and the line gets tangled up from underneath towards the surface.
Adjusting the magnetic brake (left side of reel) and/or the Cast control knob on the right side of the reel...this is for a right handed reel. Will help or stop this from happening, but learning how to do what is called thumbing the spool is the best way to prevent backlash.

Generally this is from used line. Fishing line doesn't really last that long. It wants to curl. Hold used line out loosely and you will see it trying to curl up. This can cause what is called a bird's nest which is a huge mess of tangled line just outside the spool as the curls just wrap around themselves as they can't get through the first eye. The easiest way to prevent backlash is to stop the spool from spining just before the cast lurer hits the water. When the lurer hits the water it stops the motion even though the line is still quickly going out. If you don't control the reel, there will be no tension on the line and the line will just drift in the air or bunchs up in a bird's nest.

You can stop the spin of your reel with your thumb on the hand that swung the pole.

Usually from a baitcasting reel meaning spool over run(backlash) when the spool speed is faster than the lure and line is going off the reel which can cause backlash!

For the record: I never pursued an old woman friend who is or is not my junior. Fathers usually disappear after they make a wet spot on the sheets. Age difference does matter if you are both Seniors (one being a high school senior and the other being over 65+) Babbies are best kept in a warm cabbage leaf, hats are usually not necessary unless he is also bald. Bald babbies usually have self-esteem issues so he will need to join the toupee of the month club. Talk to the Donald about that. Gas costes lots more than fipty buck dollars. You should make that young woman split the cost and also take you out to McDonald's for the wear and tear. You should never marry a junior woman just for her babby making skills. She should also be capable of wielding a mean spatula in the kitchen (if you know what I mean) I have no idea about what your question really means. I always thought Geeks were neutered or Italian or something like that.

When you use an open Baitcasting Reel and try and cast. he line becomes extremely tangled in your reel making it impossible to use again until you untie the tangled line. Also refered to as a "birds nest".
