1.) take to vet to check for medical problem
2.) clean spot with pet approved clean (Nature's Miracle, Petzyme, etc....and clean it really well!!!)
3.) place dog's food dishes in this area (dogs will usually not potty where they eat)
4.) try to account for any changes in her life (new family member, loss of family member, moved houses, new pet in house, new food, etc. even small things can affect a dog)
5.) work on re-training her...even if it means a crate or play pen....basically supervising all the time so you can prevent accidents...take her out often. and watch her water intake (too much can mean a health problem)

6.) NO PUNISHING!! since you don't know why, you might be punishing her for a medical problem, and thats not fair. it can even make your dog neurotic and unstable. violence is never the answer.

Once a scent is in the carpet they keep trying to do their business in the same place. Everytime they do it it gets easier and easier and pretty soon the potty training is right out the window. Dogs are creatures of habit.

There could be a whole bunch of reasons why your dog is doing this...you really need to watch her behaviour and analyse it.

In the meantime...clean and deodorize the carpet where she's been going...physically prevent her from going there by placing an object over the area...and when you see her sniffing around there...immediately take her outside to go...that should reinforce her potty training. Eventually you can slowly move the object away as she starts to lose interest in peeing there.

I had a dog trainer address this problem when I had my dog in puppy class. My dog was not doing it but this is what she suggested to someone else (I don't know if it worked or not)

What she suggested to do is to keep something like a box of mac-n-cheese on hand (or something that is noisy when you shake it) and when you see the dog start to pee you throw the box near them (not AT them). Try to do it so they do not see you doing it and try to get it to hit a wall or something nearby so it will make a loud noise. This will get their attention and make them stop peeing without them being afraid of you yelling at them or punishing them. Then ask the dog "Do you have to go out?" (or use whatever term you use for your particular dog). This should be done in a friendly voice (the whole purpose is not to scare your dog which can make the situation worse). Then you need to take them outside IMMEDIATELY! When they do what they are supposed to praise them ALOT!

This will only work if you are watching the dog all the time. If you cannot watch them they should be in a crate.

Also make sure you clean the spot beforehand. I had a cat with a urinary problem and I thought Nature's Miracle worked great. You may have to treat it more than once.

I went through this when I first got my beagle. Hes almost 1 now & fully potty trained. We just put a newspaper in the corner & punished him each time he peed on the carpet. But if she was potty trained before it could be something new in the house?
