You definitely make a good point!!! They are expensive. Cigarettes are cheaper to use so I guess people just go with the prices....

Cigarettes were invented about 4-5,000 years ago (at least). Admittedly, there has been research and development since then, but let's just say the overhead is not nearly as high as it is for a patch or gum.

Perhaps it will give you some perspective to realize that it can take up to 5 years to get a drug (and yes the patches and gums are considered drugs, hence the reason they sell them at pharmacies) to market. There is research on the delivery methods, the safe doses, the animal testing, and ultimately the human testing. This can run into the millions if not billions of dollars. Say what you will about the price of drugs, but the drug companies do have a right to some profit after all that.

No, the point of quitting isn't to spend the same amount of money, it's to save your life.

Besides that, you'll only be on the path or gum for a few months. Without it you'll be smoking for who knows how long... It is cheaper in the long run.

Anyways, yeah, I'm a smoker. I've tried the patch a couple times and have great luck with it... Right up until the last step. Then I always break down. But hey, it has some entertainment value too. Talk about some seriously messed up, vivid, Technicolor dreams.

I'll let you in on a little secret we just found out about. We have started going to flea markets on the weekends to browse for bargains and we have found several vendors that carry both nicorette gum and the patches for a fraction of the cost at regular stores. They usually have just reached the expiration date, but are still just as potent as any as far as we can tell. An example is 170 - 4mg nicorette for $10. Not bad huh? We have found some in the next smaller size carton, 100 or 110 for only $2. Hopefully there are some flea markets in your area with vendors that carry similar bargains.

The sense of using the nicotine patch or gum is for you to be able to wean out of the WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS when you quit smoking. It is not a substitute for a cigarrette.

The patch is MUCH cheaper
Here in Pittsburgh Pa. cigarettes average $5.00 per pack.
So, if you smoke 1 pack a day($5) X 30 days(1 month) = $150.00 per month,whereas a one month supply of nicotine patches is available for $35.00 - $50.00
$150.00
- 50.00
_______
$100.00 per month MINIMUM Savings

If, Like me, you smoked 2-1/2 - 3 packs a day the saving would be closer to $300.00 per month
Most Of the patch users, who TRULY, WANT to quit, NORMALLY do so in 3 months or less.
You could spend, at the most, $150.00
on "the patch", OR $150 a month forever

No each should be price on what the market dictates. A carton of smokes can be made for less than a buck. I'm guessing that a big box of Nicorette cost about 5-10 bucks to produce.

Multiply the # of patches by the cost of a pack of cigarettes and it comes out to about the same as a name brand cigarette because you only use one patch a day.

It is highly desirable as it would encourage many smokers to try them and get benefited. It may however make no sense as the products are quite different and so is their cost of production. One way out could be to subsidize it through a health pro gramme by ,say, government.

Very good point, but you look "cooler" smoking a cig more so than wearing a patch. Think of the reasons why people start to smoke- a very social thing. Also ciggs give people something to do with their hands.

Actually, think about the money you'll be saving when you give up smoking. You might pay for the patch or gum now, but when you're not smoking for 10 years.....you do the math. ;o)
