When the children have a choice of colors to use for writing their name , stories etc they tend to choose the same color daily. Does anyone know why?

There could be several reasons. For one thing, these children are very young. What color are they going to pick, their favorite color. Everyone has a favorite color they pick over other colors.

Then there is compulsiveness. But that is a totally different subject. We won't go there now.

Five year olds are just now learning they have choices. Give them time. They may even start sharing there favorite color with there friends. Thus choices and sharing is thrown in there too.

You say that you "work" with 5 year olds. Does this mean you are a teacher, teacher's helper or college student working for degree in education? I'm asking, because if you are a teacher, you should already know about such things.

No insult intended.

Kids always have favorites. Ever read Harold and The Purple Crayon books? His was purple, but every kid has one. Some kids change their favorite from day to day or week to week, but some never seem to change. I think some kids find comfort in the routine of always using the same.

They just find it more attractive then the others or they relate to it somehow. Like maybe their favorite kids show displays that color often. Also, they may be using it to as to annoy you since they knew you'd ask about it on Yahoo Answers. (J/K) :p

lots of different reasons from things like already stated....to its the closest one to them....its the only one they recognize the name of .....the only one they can see(everyone cant see the whole range of colors)......maybe it matches something else they like (food, clothes, parents car)...or just cuz....try asking them or do like some of the others teacher have done(including me)....

On some days only use one color...or two colors...see what happens.....some times it changes the entire aspect of the art project....try it with playdough, paint or other art supplies....

one of my favorite projects with colors involves team colors...( I used to work in San Diego, CA....so the team colors are blue, gold, and white(chargers) or brown/blue and white(padres)) so we would make large door decorations for our class and use only these colors. one year when the chargers were in the playoffs we made a sign and then I took it to the stadium and had the children look for the sign on tv during the game....this lead to a discussion that lasted several days as to what each child would like to have as team colors or what each family had as their favorite team......try it for holidays too!!!!!

Why ask us?.....you're the one in E.C.E.
..... should'nt YOU be "telling" US?
I would say it's probably just a personal preference. The same as you prefer wearing certain clothing colours more than others
