Well the fact that you put them in WATER, rather than the prescribed SOLUTION, explains it! You should NEVER store your contact lenses in water - in fact, you should never have water anywhere near your lenses. Tap water carries bacteria from your pipes and taps, imagine that growing behind your lenses! Thats why they tell you to dry your hands before putting your lenses into your eyes, and to make sure your lens case is absolutely dry before putting any solution into it. Bacteria CANNOT grow in dry conditions. Please don't use water ever again, you could easily catch an awful eye infection, or even go blind. There are plenty of examples of people who have used tap water to store lenses, and have gone blind from it.. Just google it on the internet, i have no doubt that you can find some examples. I suggest throwing these contact lenses away, and getting some new ones. And make sure you store those in sterile saline solution! You don't want to risk your sight!

Sounds like algae growth, the water must have been contaiminated or your fingers were dirty.

Contacts should be stored in contact lens soaking solution, not water.
