Stick to the wrist curls, the barbell curls put unnatural strain on the nerves in your wrists and can lead to carpal tunnel. Also when your wrists start to hurt cut down the number of reps and add weight.

The same thing happens to me. With a barbell, you can't turn your wrists at a comfortable angle, because the barbell causes them to be in a fixed position. With dumbbells, you can turn your wrists slightly so they don't hurt. There is no reason, you can't get good results using dumbbells, so just use them, and forget the barbell.

If it hurts you are doing something wrong. Positioning and proper form are key to proper and pain free movement of the exercise.
