You want to work as a DOD civilian if you don't want to deploy. You're affiliated with the military, but get to wear beards and civilian clothes because you're not in the military.
But if you want to pick a "safe" branch , out of those two I'd pick Navy, but the Coast Guard is a safe pick too.
Just don't take the job of EWO (Electronic Warfare Officer), they are all over Iraq entrenched with Army personnel.

If you want to run away and hide from life, the military is not for you. I am a veteran of the Vietnam War and the Air Force. When you sign up you are liable to do anything, anywhere. Life in the service is no joking matter. You have to decide if you want to be an adult the day you sign your enlistment papers. You can enlist generally in certain career fields if the service has a need for them. In the Marines the guy who cleans the john also carries a rifle. In the Navy the guy who paints the ship also fires the guns. In the Army the guy who does kitchen duty also has to patrol the perimeter of the battle field. In the Air Force the guy who directs traffic on the streets also guards the airplanes no matter where in the world they are. The least dangerous job in the military is being retired from it after 20 years as long as you don't get run over by a truck. As you can tell by my answer I did not like your question or your attitude towards the service. Join the circus.

Join the Navy in a job where you will stay on a ship. They closest you'll be to the front would be the Persian Gulf. You'll either be on a ship or at a Naval Base. Some Navy jobs that I saw in Iraq were EOD, Dog Handlers, and SEALs. Maybe something like working on the ship guidance systems or engines would be pretty safe. Even though not all Marines are infantry type jobs, there's a higher chance you'd be boots on the ground. And regardless of your job specialty, you'll get the same pay and benefits (depending on rank and time in service.).

I have served in combat with Infantry units, Combat Engineers and with the Army Special Forces and since my first combat tour was as a sniper. It wasn't because that I was the best shot it was because I was a private and it was in 1953 and I wasn't school trained I learned by hard knocks. I served as a scout and recon. I also, was a combat medic, Infantryman and school trained as a sapper and working with IED's. I will say it is more dangerous being a Sapper than a sniper. But that was before the more modern equipment that the army has. In 1962 - 1985 it was for soldiers disarming mines and booby traps crawling inside of tunnels chasing the enemy out or killing them before you become a casualty. Both are nerve racking but in rrecon and SF you do the same thing you may be observing a trail or paths a week or longer at a time

You need to work in an administrative job. Look for Finance, personnel or legal assistant. With jobs like these the most dangerous thing you have to worry about is the raging retiree, a paper cut, or electrical shock from all the computers around.
Stay away from the Marines or the Navy. You would be safer joining the Air Force or the Coast Guard.

Uh............they are all dangerous; in every position you can go overseas as either combat or combat support. Even if your MOS doesn't normally go, under some circumstances they might. My son was in a stateside MOS, and still got sent. They didn't even HAVE his job in Iraq (since it was specialized support), so they gave him a rifle and good boots and made him a temporary guard, for 18 months.
All of the services exist to protect us and in times of war can be activated.

You don't want risk, so you don't want the Marines.
For the other services, maybe chaplain's assistant would be safe enough for you. Everyone does details such as cleaning common areas; it isn't a specific job that you can specialize in.

Post office, you only work 4 days a week, at least in Iraq. Score low on the test so you only have choices like, cook, post office, stuff like that. Or try the Girl Scouts, because I'm not sure I want my tax dollars paying the salary of someone who wants the prestige of wearing the military uniform but doesn't want to do anything "scarey"
