I need to take coal with a calorific value of 12,880 btu/lb and figure out how much it would cost to obtain 1 million BTUs.....any help or equation..ANYTHING would be great thanks

1,000,000Btu ÷ 12,880Btu/lb = 77.64 (say 78lb) of coal.
78lb x Cost of coal per lb

Just divide 1x10^6 BTU by 12880 BTU/lb to get the pounds of coal. Then multiply the cost per lb by the pounds to get the cost. BTW: a BTU is the heat required to heat 1 pound mass of water 1 deg F.

It's a simple division. A million BTU's, divided by 12,880 BTU/lb will give the number of pounds of coal required.
